Felicity Conditions of Speech Acts

2023
In this paper, we argue that both convention and intention are necessary for the explanation of baptism as a speech act. In the first part, we introduce the theory of speech acts, discussing Austin’s account of illocution and felicity. We provide context for the characterization of speech acts and conditions for their successful performance.

Great Dead Sociologists and Felicity's Condition: Fundamental Ideas in the One and Only Sociology Course

Teaching Sociology, 1985
T eachers who almost exclusively face students taking introductory sociology as a cynical credentialing exercise or a whimsical elective must think about whether the course should be taught at all.
