Segmental composition and nerve distribution of the brachial plexus in Galictis cuja

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Galictis cuja is a neotropical mustelid with terrestrial locomotor habits, yet the anatomy of its brachial plexus has remained undescribed. This study characterizes the origin, organization, and distribution of the brachial plexus nerves in 15 adult specimens (30 antimeres).

Innervation of the tubarial glands: A hypothesis‐driven anatomical review

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The tubarial glands have been described as a macroscopic bilateral glandular complex in the posterolateral nasopharynx near the torus tubarius and the pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian tube. Since their recognition on prostate‐specific membrane antigen‐based imaging, their anatomical classification has remained debated, with converging ...

Gut microbiota and fecal metabolites in captive and wild North China leopard (Panthera pardus japonensis) by comparsion using 16 s rRNA gene sequencing and LC/MS-based metabolomics

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2020
Background Gut microbes significantly contribute to nutrient digestion and absorption, intestinal health and immunity, and are essential for the survival and environmental adaptation of wild animals.

Feline Deafness [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2012
Cats have among the best hearing of all mammals in that they are extremely sensitive to a broad range of frequencies. The ear is a highly complex structure that is delicately balanced in terms of its biochemistry, types of receptors, ion channels, mechanical properties, and cellular organization.

Three‐dimensional digital analysis of musteloid masticatory muscle architecture

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Musteloids span an enormous breadth of dietary modes within a single superfamily. In this study, we utilize digital dissection techniques to reconstruct the internal 3D anatomy of muscles within the musteloid feeding apparatus, and explore how dietary specializations might alter the size, orientation, and curvature of fascicles therein.

Feline Acromegaly [PDF]

open access: yesTopics in Companion Animal Medicine, 2012
Acromegaly, or hypersomatotropism, results from chronic, excessive secretion of growth hormone in the adult animal. The anabolic effects of growth hormone are exerted through the intermediary hormone, insulin-like growth factor 1, which is produced in the liver under the influence of growth hormone.

Bite force estimates and morphological correlations of jaw muscles in parrots

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Parrots (Order: Psittaciformes) are renowned for their high bite force (BF) and morphological correlates thereof, including a highly mobile skull and two unique mandibular adductor muscles—m. pseudomasseter and m. ethmomandibularis, with the former being hypothesized to increase force output.

Intra‐ and Interspecific Spatial Temporal Interactions Drive Habitat Selection of Three Sympatric Top Predators

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
The population distribution and habitat selection of top predators are critically important for species conservation and habitat management. While previous studies have identified environmental characteristics and food resources as factors influencing ...

Fascicle measurement methods do result in lengths that are significantly different

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
A recent comparison of the most prevalent methods for measuring fascicles, in situ measurement versus chemical digestion, concluded that the measurements are indistinguishable based on data from different conspecific individuals. However, our study of contralateral muscles of the same individuals shows that the methods clearly result in statistically ...
