The arrival of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain in 1700, in the person of Louis XIV's grandson, Felipe V (1700-46) has long been seen as a turning point in Spanish history. Felipe V's Italian adventures are also significant in suggesting the extent to which the king's ambitions represented a degree of continuity across the change of dynasty in 1700.
