Temporally‐indexed multi‐species density impact functions: Quantifying timing and impact of invasive predators on seabird breeding success

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Conserving threatened species often requires effective predator suppression strategies, particularly on islands where introduced predators pose significant threats. Density‐impact functions provide a framework to quantify the relationships between predator abundance and impact but are currently limited to a single species with invariant impact.

Effects of sotagliflozin on markers of volume status and sodium handling in patients with type 1 diabetes: A biomarker analysis of the inTandem3 clinical trial

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Sotagliflozin, an inhibitor of sodium‐glucose co‐transporter (SGLT)‐1 and 2, reduces albuminuria, slows GFR decline, and may have diuretic and osmoregulatory effects. The effect of sotagliflozin added to insulin was assessed on markers of neurohormone activation and volume homeostasis in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

A new species of jewel‐babbler (Cinclosomatidae: Ptilorrhoa) from the Southern Fold Mountains of Papua New Guinea

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Based on distinctive morphological and vocal characters we describe a new species of jewel‐babbler (genus Ptilorrhoa) from the forested karst of the Southern Fold Mountains in Papua New Guinea. The description is based on camera trap data and is presented in accordance with ICZN Declaration 45.

Social media highlights the overlooked impact of cats on arthropods

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
The impact of domestic cats on vertebrate biodiversity is unequivocal; however, we still know little about their effects on arthropods. By analysing over 17,000 photos and videos from social media platforms (iStock and TikTok), we documented 550 predation events of cats on arthropods.

A suture in time: The ontogeny of cranial suture morphology in mammals

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Mammal cranial sutures are important indicators of the biomechanical and developmental pressures acting upon the skull. Across three prominent sutures dividing the vault of the mammalian skull, divergent patterns emerge both taxonomically and developmentally.

Age‐Dependent Increase in Small Intestinal Permeability and Sex‐Dependent Absorptive Capacity in Cats (Felis catus)

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Age‐associated changes in intestinal permeability and function have not been studied in domestic cats, leaving a key factor in the relationship between age and digestive health in cats unexplored. Due to factors not currently understood, mature and senior cats may experience a loss of fat and protein digestibility, along with a loss of body ...

Minimally invasive osteosynthesis using a dynamic compression angle‐stable interlocking nail in feline transverse femoral fractures: an ex vivo study

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of interfragmentary compression in feline femoral transverse fractures treated with a dynamic compression angle‐stable interlocking nail implanted via minimally invasive nail osteosynthesis. Methods Thirty femurs from 15 feline cadavers were allocated into three groups according to fracture location (n = 10 per ...

Functional Characterization of the Cat and Dog Wild‐Type and Mutant MDR1 Carrier Proteins and Frequency of the MDR1 Gene Mutation in 800 Cats From Germany

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ATP‐binding cassette transporter MDR1 P‐glycoprotein (syn. ABCB1) is an efflux carrier at the cell membrane that regulates drug absorption, distribution, and elimination. At the blood–brain barrier, MDR1 restricts brain entry of potentially neurotoxic drugs, such as ivermectin. In dogs and cats, MDR1 (syn.

Wild boar feeding habits before versus after wolf recolonization

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
By analyzing wild boar diet before and after wolf recolonization in a Mediterranean coastal area, we evaluated whether the return of wolves facilitated feeding on deer carcasses by wild boar. While deer hair was never reported in samples of wild boar feces in 1991–1994, we found it in c.
