X-FEM and FEM for Discontinuities Modelling: a Comparative Study
International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME), 2017In this investigation, we present a comparative study on finite elements for capturing discontinuities by means of standard finite elements (FEM) or extended finite elements (X-FEM). For this purpose, several specimens containing geometrical and material discontinuities have been analyzed. The analysis covered different basic geometrical configurations,

In this chapter, finite element (FE) equations for plates and shells are developed. The procedure is to first develop FE matrices for plate elements, and the FE matrices for shell elements are then obtained by superimposing the matrices for plate elements and those for 2D solid plane stress elements.

DOMAIN DECOMPOSITION WITH BEM AND FEM
International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1997A method is constructed where we have coupling of the two different title methods in a weak form. As a result, we can analyse a given structure with two different grids independent of each other. On this account, we see that the advantage of the proposed method is in its ability to couple BEM and FEM. The construction of the numerical algorithm depends

Two-scale modeling of granular materials: A FEM-FEM approach
Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering, 2013In the present paper, a homogenization-based two-scale FEM-FEM model is developed to simulate compactions of visco-plastic granular assemblies. The granular structure consisting of two-dimensional grains is modeled by the microscopic finite element method at the small-scale level, and the homogenized viscous assembly is analyzed by the macroscopic ...
