Archives of General Psychiatry, 1973Repeated genital self-mutilation in a woman is described, associated with episodes of anorexia, bulimia, and a wide range of actingout behavior. This is discussed in the light of two cases previously reported in the literature and another case reported earlier, but little recognized.

Young women and girls who undergo FGM are subjected to the risk of developing infections as well as gynecological and psychological complications. Where severe bleeding occurs, the risk of death is imminent.
