Wood density variation across an Andes‐to‐Amazon elevational gradient

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2370-2385, September 2025.
We study how wood density varies along a 3500‐m elevational gradient, spanning from the Andean tree line to the Amazon basin. Our results reveal that wood density decreases from low to mid‐elevations, then increases toward the tree line. These patterns underscore the influence of species composition, life forms such as tree ferns, and local ...

International consensus principles for the sustainable harvest of polar bears

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract Multilateral agreements are required for the effective management of large carnivores with ranges that cross geopolitical boundaries. This is particularly important for species subject to rapid changes in distribution or demographic status due to climate warming. We considered 3 international consensus principles for the sustainable harvest of

Dos Miradas a la Autenticidad: Nostalgia Sensorial y Nostalgia de Conquista en el Campo Culinario Mexicano de la Ciudad de Nueva York

open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 30, Issue 2, June 2025.
ABSTRACT This article analyzes the different expressions of authenticity, fidelity, and genuineness surrounding the Mexican culinary scene in New York. On the one hand, self‐identified Mexicans express sensory and memory nostalgia during the production and consumption of foods they recognize as their own.

Rift‐Related Low‐Pressure–High‐Temperature Granulite Facies Metamorphism Generates Widespread Peraluminous Crustal Melts: Evidence From the Early Jurassic Mexican Crust

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract High heat fluxes occurring in rift settings are expected to generate partially melted low‐pressure–high‐temperature granulites (LP–HTG). Therefore, studying these rocks can offer valuable insights into crustal reworking during extension. However, our interpretations are limited by the rarity of LP–HTG in the metamorphic record.

Polymorphisms within autophagy‐related genes as susceptibility biomarkers for pancreatic cancer: A meta‐analysis of three large European cohorts and functional characterization

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 156, Issue 2, Page 339-352, 15 January 2025.
What's new? The etiology of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), among the most aggressive and deadliest cancers worldwide, remains largely unknown. Here, using data from cohorts of European ancestry, the authors investigated the influence on PDAC risk of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes associated with autophagy. Analyses identified

Beyond 4 × 4: Paramotoring a novel approach to accelerate plant exploration in challenging environments

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 87-104, January 2025.
Addressing the burning environmental crisis, we explore how the ‘extreme sport’ of paramotoring can enhance and accelerate scientific exploration with minimal environmental impact compared to off‐road vehicles. Our study demonstrates the scientific potential of paramotoring to access fragile desert ecosystems and investigate unrecorded habitats and ...

Adivasi (Tea Tribe) worldviews of living close to wild Asian elephants in Assam, India

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 6, December 2024.
Abstract In Assam state, northeastern India, human–elephant conflict mitigation has included technocentric measures, such as installation of barriers, alternative livelihoods, and afforestation. Such measures treat conflict as a technical problem with linear cause–effect relations and are usually ineffective over the long term because they do not ...

Resilient Commoning: The Reproduction of the Basque Commons in the Longue Durée

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 56, Issue 6, Page 2321-2342, November 2024.
Abstract In this article, I offer an innovative approach to examining the reproduction of commoning in the longue durée. I adopt a broad, but fundamentally spatial, understanding of commoning and enclosure that recognises not only the material but also the political, socio‐cultural, and labour commons.

Cattle and nurse trees shape subtropical forest–grassland ecotones

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2430-2443, October 2024.
Tree cover can potentially expand on the subtropical South American grasslands. Reductions in cattle densities and increases in rainfall levels associated with climate change could facilitate forest expansion in this region. Abstract South American subtropical landscapes are dominated by open grasslands and mosaics of forest–grassland formations ...
