Insulinoma was diagnosed in a 7-year-old female ferret examined because of generalized seizures, intermittent paraplegia, and abnormal behavior. Low serum glucose, high serum insulin, and infinite amended insulin/glucose ratio values in this ferret supported the clinical diagnosis of insulinoma.

An adult male ferret was found to be lethargic and dyspneic. Necropsy revealed 21 worms in the heart, vena cava, and pulmonary artery. The worms were identified as Dirofilaria immitis. Histologic examination of lung tissue revealed numerous microfilariae.

The unusually short intestinal tract of ferrets and closely related mustelids lacks a cecum and ileocolic valve. As a result, the transit time of ingesta in these carnivores is very rapid compared with other animals, and their food is inefficiently digested.
