Ferroelectric liquid crystals [PDF]

open access: yesJournal de Physique Lettres, 1975
A general symmetry argument is presented, and experiments on newly synthesized p-decyloxybenzylidene p'-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate are described, demonstrating that chiral smectic C and H liquid crystals are ferroelectric. Some of the properties of this new class of ferro-electrics are discussed.

Ferroelectric Smectic Liquid Crystals as Electrocaloric Materials

open access: yesCrystals, 2022
The 1980s saw the development of ferroelectric chiral smectic C (SmC*) liquid crystals (FLCs) with a clear focus on their application in fast electro-optic devices.

Chiral π-Conjugated Liquid Crystals: Impacts of Ethynyl Linker and Bilateral Symmetry on the Molecular Packing and Functions

open access: yesCrystals, 2022
Recently, various chiral aromatic compounds, including chiral π-conjugated liquid crystals, have been developed for their unique photofunctions. One of the typical photofunctions is the bulk photovoltaic effect of ferroelectric π-conjugated liquid ...

Ferroelectric Particles in Nematic Liquid Crystals with Soft Anchoring

open access: yesMolecules, 2021
A theoretical evaluation of the electric Freedericksz transition threshold and saturation field is proposed for a liquid crystals composite with ferroelectric particles.

Nano-clustering mediates phase transitions in a diastereomerically-stabilized ferroelectric nematic system

open access: yesCommunications Materials, 2022
Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals are interesting due to their combined high polarizability, electro-optic activity, and fluidity. Here, the authors tune the ferroelectric nematic phase transition by mixing diastereomer molecules, investigating the ...

Photo-Aligned Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Devices with Novel Electro-Optic Characteristics

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
This paper examines different applications of ferroelectric liquid crystal devices based on photo-alignment. Successful application of the photo-alignment technique is considered to be a critical breakthrough.

The Birefringence and Extinction Coefficient of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals in the Terahertz Range

open access: yesPhotonics, 2023
In this paper, the refractive index and extinction coefficient of ferroelectric liquid crystals have been examined by the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system.

A self-healing ferroelectric liquid crystal electro-optic shutter based on vertical surface-relief grating alignment

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) have faster optical response times than nematic crystals, but they are also less robust to external shock. Here the authors develop an FLC geometry that reduces the sensitivity to external disruption through self ...

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal thermomotor

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2022
A thermal gradient-induced circular motion of particles placed on ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal sessile drops is demonstrated and explained. Unlike hurricanes and tornadoes that are the prime examples for thermal motors and where turbulent flows are apparent, here the texture without tracer particles appears completely steady indicating laminar ...

Revealing the polar nature of a ferroelectric nematic by means of circular alignment

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The recent discovery of spontaneously polar nematic liquid crystals—so-called ferroelectric nematics—more than a century after the first discussions about their possible existence—has attracted large interest, both from fundamental scientific and ...
