Ferroelectric liquid crystals [PDF]
A general symmetry argument is presented, and experiments on newly synthesized p-decyloxybenzylidene p'-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate are described, demonstrating that chiral smectic C and H liquid crystals are ferroelectric. Some of the properties of this new class of ferro-electrics are discussed.

Ferroelectric Smectic Liquid Crystals as Electrocaloric Materials
The 1980s saw the development of ferroelectric chiral smectic C (SmC*) liquid crystals (FLCs) with a clear focus on their application in fast electro-optic devices.

Ferroelectric Particles in Nematic Liquid Crystals with Soft Anchoring
A theoretical evaluation of the electric Freedericksz transition threshold and saturation field is proposed for a liquid crystals composite with ferroelectric particles.

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals are interesting due to their combined high polarizability, electro-optic activity, and fluidity. Here, the authors tune the ferroelectric nematic phase transition by mixing diastereomer molecules, investigating the ...

Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) have faster optical response times than nematic crystals, but they are also less robust to external shock. Here the authors develop an FLC geometry that reduces the sensitivity to external disruption through self ...

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal thermomotor
A thermal gradient-induced circular motion of particles placed on ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal sessile drops is demonstrated and explained. Unlike hurricanes and tornadoes that are the prime examples for thermal motors and where turbulent flows are apparent, here the texture without tracer particles appears completely steady indicating laminar ...

Revealing the polar nature of a ferroelectric nematic by means of circular alignment
The recent discovery of spontaneously polar nematic liquid crystals—so-called ferroelectric nematics—more than a century after the first discussions about their possible existence—has attracted large interest, both from fundamental scientific and ...
