Knockout of the mitoribosome rescue factors Ict1 or Mtrfr is viable in zebrafish but not mice: compensatory mechanisms underlying each factor's loss

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mitochondria contain two mitoribosome rescue factors, ICT1 and MTRFR (C12orf65). ICT1 also functions as a mitoribosomal protein in mice and humans, and its loss is lethal. Although Mtrfr knockout mice could not be generated, knockout zebrafish lines for ict1 and mtrfr were established.

Fertilisation of Orchids [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1873
MR. DARWIN, in his “Fertilisation of Orchids,” speaks of a Madagascar orchid (Angraecum sesquipedale) with nectaries 11½ inches long, and supposes that these plants must be fertilised by the efforts of huge moths, with probosces capable of such expansion, to obtain the last drops of the nectar which is secreted in the lower part of these whip-like ...

Short peptide perturbs spermatogenesis via immune microenvironment dysregulation and mitochondrial imbalance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In the blood–testis barrier, occludin is crucial for tight junctions. This study demonstrates that occludin‐targeting short peptides disrupt junction integrity, inducing immune cell infiltration, tumor necrosis factor‐α/interleukin‐6 secretion and mitochondrial dysfunction, ultimately triggering apoptosis.

Fertilisation by Moths [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1872
IT has recently been suggested to me that the following note on the readiness with which moths wander, and their efficiency in fertilising orchids, is worth publication; I therefore forward it to you.

Murine Models and Human Cell Line Models to Study Altered Dynamics of Ovarian Follicles in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The manuscript examines preclinical murine and human models to study polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), delving into the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying altered ovarian follicular dynamics. It explores the cellular interactions involved in normal and PCOS ovaries and outlines the current and novel strategies in the search for preclinical ...

The Fertilising Influence of Sunlight [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1910
THE past history of agricultural science furnishes several examples of belated explanations of the utility of practices the value of which has long become a tradition among practical men. The explanation of the value of leguminous crops in agriculture is a good example.
