Occurrence, properties, and applications of feruloyl esterases

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2009
Feruloyl esterases hydrolyze the ester linkages of ferulic and diferulic acids present in plant cell walls. This interesting group of enzymes also has a potentially broad range of applications in the pharmaceutical and agri-food industries. An overview of the current knowledge of fungal feruloyl esterases focusing on the diverse of substrate ...

Functional classification of the microbial feruloyl esterases

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2004
Feruloyl esterases have potential uses over a broad range of applications in the agri-food industries. In recent years, the number of microbial feruloyl esterase activities reported has increased and, in parallel, even more related protein sequences may be discerned in the growing genome databases.

Feruloyl esterase activity and its role in regulating the feruloylation of maize cell walls

Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, 2020
Cell walls of grasses have ferulic acid (FA) ester-linked to the arabinosyl substitutions of arabinoxylan (AX). Feruloyl esterases (FAE) are carboxylic acid esterases that release FA from cell walls and synthetic substrates. Despite the importance of FA for cell wall recalcitrance and in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, the physiological ...

Characterization of feruloyl esterases in maize pollen

Planta, 2019
Ferulic acid esterases have been identified and partially purified from maize pollen. Results suggest that maize pollen FAEs may play an important role in pollen fertilization. A critical step in maize (Zea mays) seed production involves fertilization of the ovule by pollen, a process that relies on ability of the pollen tube to grow through the highly

A halotolerant type A feruloyl esterase from Pleurotus eryngii

Fungal Biology, 2014
An extracellular feruloyl esterase (PeFaeA) from the culture supernatant of Pleurotus eryngii was purified to homogeneity using cation exchange, hydrophobic interaction, and size exclusion chromatography. The length of the complete coding sequence of PeFaeA was determined to 1668 bp corresponding to a protein of 555 amino acids.

Regioselective esterase-catalyzed feruloylation of l-arabinobiose

Carbohydrate Research, 2006
The regioselective chemoenzymatic synthesis of O-[5-O-(trans-feruloyl)-alpha-L-arabinofuranosyl]-(1-->5)-L-arabinofuranose has been achieved. The reaction parameters affecting the feruloylation rate and conversion of the enzymatic synthesis, such as the composition of the reaction medium, substrate and enzyme concentration, have been investigated.

Synthesis of highly water-soluble feruloyl diglycerols by esterification of an Aspergillus niger feruloyl esterase

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2012
Ferulic acid (FA) is a component of plant cell walls that has applications in food, cosmetic, and health products, but its applications are limited by its high insolubility. We synthesized water-soluble FA derivatives by esterification of FA with diglycerol (DG) using feruloyl esterase purified from a commercial enzyme preparation produced by ...

A Zymogram technique for preliminary screening and characterization of feruloyl esterases

Enzyme and Microbial Technology, 2017
We report here, for the first time, a zymogram technique designed for rapid screening of feruloyl esterase using ethyl ferulate as enzyme substrate and casein precipitation as enzyme activity indicator.

Metagenomic discovery of feruloyl esterases from rumen microflora

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2019
Feruloyl esterases (FAEs) are a key group of enzymes that hydrolyze ferulic acids ester-linked to plant polysaccharides. The cow's rumen is a highly evolved ecosystem of complex microbial microflora capable of converting fibrous substances to energy. From direct cloning of the rumen microbial metagenome, we identified seven active phagemids conferring ...
