The term 'fetal distress' should be replaced by 'suspected fetal compromise' because the diagnosis of 'fetal distress' is often unproven. Cardiotocography remains the cornerstone of making the diagnosis, but as a test it is renowned for its high sensitivity and low specificity.

Fetal arrhythmias may be benign or life-threatening. Benign disturbances in fetal cardiac rhythm are relatively common, and their clinical manifestations are reviewed. Life-threatening fetal arrhythmias include supraventricular tachycardias, atrial flutter, ventricular or junctional tachycardia, chaotic atrial tachycardia, and bradyarrhythmias such as ...

A sonolucent band (pseudoascites) was retrospectively identified beneath the fetal abdominal wall in 39.7% of 141 normal obstetrical sonograms. In 12.6% of the examinations, the band was wide enough to be potentially confused with actual ascites. Pseudoascites was unrelated to fetal age or position, placental location, or equipment used.

Since the first report of fetal echocardiography in 1972 by Winsberg, several advances in ultrasound technology have occurred allowing detailed evaluation of cardiac anatomy in the second trimester fetus. Fetal echo is indicated in high risk pregnancies where the chances of fetus having a congenital heart disease (CHD) are likely to be high e.g., in ...

Three male fetuses examined sonographically in late gestation to assess growth and well-being were found to have evidence of gallbladder cholelithiasis. Postnatally, all three were asymptomatic but they had variable sonographic findings. In two, the abnormalities noted sonographically had resolved spontaneously by 6 weeks of age, but the third patient ...

Toxic chemicals, either from natural sources or man-made, are ubiquitous in our environment. Many of the synthetic chemicals make life more comfortable and therefore production continues to grow. Simultaneously with the increase in production, an increase in neurodevelopmental disorders has been observed.
