Hypoxemia and increased fetal hemoglobin synthesis
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1994Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) synthesis in children with congenital cyanotic heart disease was compared that in normal children. Children with hypoxemia had higher levels of hemoglobin, total HbF, and HbF synthesis. In these children there was also an inverse correlation between HbF synthesis and oxygen content, as well as between HbF synthesis and hemoglobin

Mouse hemoglobin during gestation Absence of fetal hemoglobin
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 1982A "fetal hemoglobin' has been reported to exist during mouse gestation, Investigations using CMC chromatography, starch gel electrophoresis or isoelectric focusing have shown a hemoglobin band from fetal tissues, and blood was obtained which was different from the adult hemoglobin and designated a "fetal hemoglobin'.

Developmental Changes in Fetal Hemoglobin
1968About 100 years ago, Korber observed the resistance of cord blood to alkali denaturation when compared with blood from adults. Since that time we have gained considerable insight into the biochemistry of adult (Hb A) and fetal (Hb F) hemoglobin, as reviewed recently by Jonxis (1) and Baglioni (2).

The molecular mechanism of fetal hemoglobin reactivation
Seminars in Hematology, 2004Increased levels of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) are clinically beneficial in patients with sickle cell disease. Hydroxurea fails to increase HbF in at least 25% of patients, and therefore, better drugs are needed. Recent clinical studies have shown that the DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitor decitabine effectively increased HbF in hydroxyurea-refractory
