Survival in the fetal rabbit exposed to intermittent hypoxia

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1977
To investigate the time course and mechanisms of fetal O2 deprivation, we exposed 93 near-term, pregnant rabbits and their fetuses in utero to intermittent hypoxia. We administered a gas mixture containing 3, 4, 5 or 6 per cent O2 in N2 to a rabbit for 0.5, 1, 2, or 3 minutes, alternately with a recovery period of air breathing of 0.5, 1, 2, or 3 ...

Placental Immaturity, Endocardial Fibroelastosis and Fetal Hypoxia

Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, 2009
We describe a term newborn who, after a normal gestational course, presented at birth with absent cardiac activity and no spontaneous breathing. Death occurred within 30 h. Autopsy revealed placental villous immaturity, multiple acute hypoxic lesions, but also chronic hypoxic lesions like endocardial fibroelastosis.

The effect of glucose loading on the fetal response to hypoxia

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1970
A glucose load was administered to the fetus in utero by maternal infusion prior to hypoxia in 12 sheep experiments. The placental transport mechanism for glucose appeared saturated at high maternal concentrations of glucose and dependent on oxygen as a source of energy.

MATERNAL SICKLE CELL TRAIT AND FETAL HYPOXIA

American Journal of Perinatology, 2000
Patients with sickle cell trait (SCT) usually run a benign course. But they may develop vaso-occlusive crisis, which may lead to hypoxia. During these episodes, pregnant women with SCT may effect the developing fetus. This report describes an interesting finding of subtle degree of fetal hypoxia associated with maternal SCT.
