Fetal monitoring

Journal of Biomedical Engineering, 1988
This paper introduces fetal monitoring by describing the medical problems of the fetus in utero. The various methods currently used to monitor the fetus are reviewed with their respective advantages and shortcomings. New methods of surveillance of the fetus are highlighted as well as the mother's reaction to the technology.

Intrapartum Fetal Monitoring

Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2015
Intrapartum fetal monitoring to assess fetal well-being during the labor and delivery process has been a central component of intrapartum care for decades. Today, electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) is the most common method used to assess the fetus during labor without substantial evidence to suggest a benefit.

Electronic Fetal Monitoring

Nursing Management (Springhouse), 1996
Currently, recommendations regarding the marginal value of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) to the standard practice management of the patient in labor must be couched in qualifications regarding both patient tolerance for risk and health team uncertainty about practice guidelines for intermittent auscultation during pregnancy.

On intrapartum fetal monitoring

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1996
The currently advised conduct for intrapartum surveillance of the fetus is either intermittent auscultation of continuous electronic monitoring, depending on the physician's preference. This applies to all, normal or high-risk, conditions. The bases for this recommendation, a number of controlled studies comparing the two methods, showed no better ...

Fetal Monitoring of Twins

Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing, 1992
Perinatal mortality for twins is five to seven times that for singletons. This disparity is related to a variety of risk factors that may alter the health of the woman and her fetuses. With twin pregnancies, antepartum surveillance frequently begins earlier in gestation.

The Fetal Monitoring Polemic

Clinics in Perinatology, 1982
Advocates consider electronic fetal monitoring to be a routine technique, potentially beneficial to all pregnancies. Critics believe it is a meddlesome, cumbersome technique that offers no advantage over auscultation for low-risk, or even high-risk, patients.

Fetal Movement Monitoring

Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1995
Monitoring fetal movement serves as an indirect measure of central nervous system integrity and function. The coordination of whole-body movement, which requires complex neurologic control, is similar to that of the preterm newborn infant. Short-term observations of the fetus are best performed using real-time ultrasound imaging or Doppler ultrasound ...

Fetal Monitoring with Pulse Oximetry

Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1991
Summary. Continuous fetal monitoring was achieved with a fetal scalp pulse oximetry sensor in 86 labours. The average recorded fetal oxygen saturation in early labour (cervical dilatation < 5 cm) was 68% (SD 13%). At the end of labour (cervical dilatation ≥ 9 cm) the recorded mean oxygen saturation was 58% (SD 17%).

The neonatal value of fetal monitoring

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1975
In general the use of fetal monitoring has been felt to be of benefit in the prevention of fetal death. The type of recording obtained during labor may also be of significant value to the pediatrician in permitting him to anticipate respiratory distress.

Electronic Fetal Monitoring

Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1999
To determine which combinations of fetal heart rate pattern abnormalities are associated with normal outcome in term pregnancies.A cohort of 2200 consecutive deliveries was examined and the fetal heart rate tracings analyzed. Singleton, term patients without chorioamnionitis or serious malformations were used to perform logistic regression analysis to ...
