Within the last ten years several groups adapted pulse oximetry to be used in the fetus. The obvious advantage of this technology is the fact that a biochemical parameter--the arterial oxygen saturation--can be measured continuously during delivery. Nevertheless, the continuous information about the fetal oxygenation during delivery has a couple of ...

Antepartum fetal pulse oximetry
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 1997To examine the feasibility of antepartum fetal pulse oximetry by using a specially designed probe.Twenty multiparous patients at term planned for induction of labor. The probe was passed through the cervix and held against the fetal scalp. Two laser diodes provided light in the near-infrared spectral region.

Fetal Monitoring with Pulse Oximetry
Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1991Summary. Continuous fetal monitoring was achieved with a fetal scalp pulse oximetry sensor in 86 labours. The average recorded fetal oxygen saturation in early labour (cervical dilatation < 5 cm) was 68% (SD 13%). At the end of labour (cervical dilatation ≥ 9 cm) the recorded mean oxygen saturation was 58% (SD 17%).

Background. During recent years fetal pulse oximetry has been under development for use in monitoring fetal oxygenation during labor. In a methodological study we have tested the practical applicability of one type of sensor (FS‐10 Oxisensor, Nellcor®). Both obstetricians and midwives took active part in sensor placement. The readings of fetal arterial

Accuracy of fetal pulse oximetry
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 2002Background. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the agreement of fetal pulse oximetry to saturation readings from hemoximetry at low oxygen saturation.Methods. Fetal oxygen saturation measurements obtained by pulse oximetry were compared with those obtained by hemoximetry in fetal scalp blood samplings.

Fetal pulse oximetry provides a tool for the surveillance of the fetus at risk of hypoxia. The experience of 150 deliveries monitored by pulse oximetry and the analysis of data may allow preliminary recommendations for clinical use in cases of suspected fetal hypoxia based on a suspicious FHR.

Fetal transmission pulse oximetry
Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. 'Magnificent Milestones and Emerging Opportunities in Medical Engineering' (Cat. No.97CH36136), 2002This paper describes the characterization and validation of a fetal transmission pulse oximetry system using in vivo measurement and statistical analysis techniques. Methods and results from immature piglet studies using the fetal pulse oximetry sensor are discussed.
