Optical Nanofibers: a new platform for quantum optics

open access: yes, 2017
The development of optical nanofibers (ONF) and the study and control of their optical properties when coupling atoms to their electromagnetic modes has opened new possibilities for their use in quantum optics and quantum information science.

Twist Sensor Based on Long Period Grating and Tilted Bragg Grating Written in Few-Mode Fibers

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2018
A twist sensor based on a few-mode long period grating (LPG) and a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) is proposed and demonstrated. The LPG, inscribed in a step index few-mode fiber by a CO2 laser, is utilized to excite the LP11 core mode.

Intermodal Four-Wave Mixing In A Higher-Order-Mode Fiber [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Much effort has gone into the study of silica and its material properties due to its importance in long distance communication. Especially, the propagation of optical pulses in single-mode fibers and their interplay with nonlinear effects have been ...

Mode-Field Radius of Photonic Crystal Fibers Expressed by the V-parameter

open access: yes, 2003
We numerically calculate the equivalent mode-field radius of the fundamental mode in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and show that this is a function of the V-parameter only and not the relative hole size.

Single-mode Fiber and Few-Mode Fiber Photonic Lanterns Performance Evaluated for Use in a Scalable Real-Time Photon Counting Ground Receiver [PDF]

open access: yes
Photonic lanterns provide an efficient way of coupling light from a single large-core fiber to multiple small-core fibers. This capability is of interest for space to ground communication applications.

Simultaneous Measurement of Chromatic and Modal Dispersion in FMFs Using Microwave Photonic Techniques

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2017
A microwave-photonic technique for measuring dispersion characteristics of few-mode fibers is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We extract these dispersion parameters by sweeping the frequency of microwave signals modulated on an optical carrier.

2W/nm Peak-power All-Fiber Supercontinuum Source and its Application to the Characterization of Periodically Poled Nonlinear Crystals

open access: yes, 2007
We demonstrate a uniform high spectral brightness and peak power density all-fiber supercontinuum source. The source consists of a nanosecond Ytterbium fiber laser and an optimal length PCF producing a continuum with a peak power density of 2 W/nm and ...

High-order-mode Brillouin random fiber laser based on distributed Rayleigh scattering in all-few mode fiber half-open cavity

open access: yesResults in Physics
A high-order-mode (HOM) Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) based on distributed Rayleigh scattering in an all-few-mode fiber random cavity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.

Genetic Algorithm Optimization for Designing Polarization-Maintaining Few-Mode Fibers with Uniform Doping Profiles

open access: yesPhotonics
To support mode-division multiplexing with reduced inter-modal crosstalk, we propose a novel polarization-maintaining few-mode fiber design with a uniform doping profile and no air holes.
