Ultra-wide band transmission in few-mode fibers

European Conference on Optical Communication, 2021
Space-division multiplexing (SDM) enables the transmission of independent data channels over different fiber modes of multi-mode fibers. In this talk, we review key characteristics of devices and fibers for SDM transmission and summarize recent SDM ...

Efficient Mode Multiplexer for Few-Mode Fibers Using Integrated Silicon-on-Insulator Waveguide Grating Coupler

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 2020
We propose a novel and highly efficient multimode waveguide grating coupler which can simultaneously launch four channels including two polarizations of the linear polarized (LP) modes, LP01 and LP11 of a step-index few-mode fiber (FMF).

Singlemode Soliton in Few-Mode Fiber

Advanced Photonics 2016 (IPR, NOMA, Sensors, Networks, SPPCom, SOF), 2016
We demonstrate that a 5-mode fiber is able to propagate strictly singlemode soliton. Single transverse mode behavior is evidenced by means of spectrally- and spatially-resolved imaging using the soliton itself as a broadband source.

Spatial Mode Division Multiplexing of Few Mode Fiber

European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, 2012
The independent excitation and detection of spatial modes in few-mode fiber networks presents major challenges. This paper presents novel spatial mode-division-multiplexing techniques based on planar couplers and asymmetric Y-junctions. These developments may play a role in future high-capacity few-mode fiber telecommunications.

High Capacity Transmission With Few-Mode Fibers

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2019
We experimentally investigate high-capacity few-mode fiber transmission for short and medium-haul optical links. In separate experiments, we demonstrate C + L band transmission of 283 Tbit/s over a single 30 km span and recirculating loop transmission of

Few-mode fiber transmission with in-line few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
We demonstrate wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) and mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission over a fiber recirculating loop comprising of a 25-km span of low differential mode group dispersion (DMGD) few-mode fiber carrying the LP01 and LP11 mode groups, and an inline few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) providing low mode ...

Distributed Characterization of Few-Mode Fibers Based on Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2020
A novel technique to measure differential group delay and modal birefringence along few mode fibers is presented. The method relies on the analysis of the spectral correlation between two properly-selected sections of the fiber's Rayleigh-backscattered ...

Splicing of few mode fibers

2014 The European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2014
Fabrication results of three types of few mode fiber are presented including a new large area fiber. Splice performance, including splice loss and mode conversion, of the few mode fibers are evaluated.

Design of 12 OAM-Graded index few mode fibers for next generation short haul interconnect transmission

, 2020
The exploitation of the spatial dimension in space division multiplexing (SDM) is a promising solution for increasing the transmission capacity and substantially improving the spectrum efficiency.

Few-mode fibers for mode-division multiplexing

2013 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2013
The design of few-mode fibers will be discussed from the point of view of key attributes and fundamental limitations. We will consider the maximum number of modes that might be supported in a practical fiber.
