All Fiber is Not Fiber

Current Gastroenterology Reports, 2022
Epidemiologic studies and clinical trials have demonstrated the benefits of dietary fiber. This occurs through a combination of the physiochemical properties of fiber and through microbial fermentation that occurs in the colon which result in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). The purpose of this review is to highlight the physiochemical

Fiber and Cancer

Medical Oncology and Tumor Pharmacotherapy, 1986
The role of dietary fiber in colon cancer is still not clear. Ecological studies suggested a protective role for high fiber intake, but more recent analysis shows similar intakes of dietary fiber in populations with high or low incidence of colon cancer. Case-control studies generally do not support a protective role for fiber.

Fiber fuse effect in microstructured fibers

OFC 2003 Optical Fiber Communications Conference, 2003., 2003
In this paper we report the first observation of the fuse effect in a microstructured fiber. The fiber was fabricated by drilling holes in a silica rod and subsequent drawing of a fiber with output diameter of 125 /spl mu/m. The threshold intensity of laser radiation and some features of catastrophic damage differ strongly from those for conventional ...

Strength of composites with long-aligned fibers: fiber–fiber and fiber–crack interaction

Composites Part B: Engineering, 1998
Abstract This paper presents a finite element formulation of elasticity to model elastic fracture in composites with long aligned fibers. We have employed a B-bar type approach which is applicable to compressible as well as nearly incompressible material systems.

Specialty Fibers for Fiber-optic Sensors

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2014
The paper describes optical fibers due to evanescent field and interferometric sensing, advanced temperature measuring and Raman sensors. Fiber applications will be combined with a focus on technology efforts for the fiber and sensor fabrication.
