Epidemiologic studies and clinical trials have demonstrated the benefits of dietary fiber. This occurs through a combination of the physiochemical properties of fiber and through microbial fermentation that occurs in the colon which result in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). The purpose of this review is to highlight the physiochemical

The role of dietary fiber in colon cancer is still not clear. Ecological studies suggested a protective role for high fiber intake, but more recent analysis shows similar intakes of dietary fiber in populations with high or low incidence of colon cancer. Case-control studies generally do not support a protective role for fiber.

Fiber fuse effect in microstructured fibers
OFC 2003 Optical Fiber Communications Conference, 2003., 2003In this paper we report the first observation of the fuse effect in a microstructured fiber. The fiber was fabricated by drilling holes in a silica rod and subsequent drawing of a fiber with output diameter of 125 /spl mu/m. The threshold intensity of laser radiation and some features of catastrophic damage differ strongly from those for conventional ...

Strength of composites with long-aligned fibers: fiber–fiber and fiber–crack interaction
Composites Part B: Engineering, 1998Abstract This paper presents a finite element formulation of elasticity to model elastic fracture in composites with long aligned fibers. We have employed a B-bar type approach which is applicable to compressible as well as nearly incompressible material systems.
