Fiber optics without fiber

IEEE Spectrum, 2001
Low-power infrared beams, which do not harm the eyes, are the means by which free-space optics (FSO) technology transmits data through the air between transceivers, or link heads, mounted on roof-tops or behind windows. It works over distances of several hundred meters to a few kilometers, depending upon atmospheric conditions. The authors believe that

Fiber and Cancer

Medical Oncology and Tumor Pharmacotherapy, 1986
The role of dietary fiber in colon cancer is still not clear. Ecological studies suggested a protective role for high fiber intake, but more recent analysis shows similar intakes of dietary fiber in populations with high or low incidence of colon cancer. Case-control studies generally do not support a protective role for fiber.

Application of Optical Fibers for Acoustic Fibers

Optical Fiber Sensors, 1986
An analogy between guided wave properties of optical fibers and acoustic fibers is introduced. Cladded glass fibers can be used for either fiber acoustic or fiber optic waveguides or both. Sensor applications are discussed.

Fiber fuse effect in microstructured fibers

OFC 2003 Optical Fiber Communications Conference, 2003., 2003
In this paper we report the first observation of the fuse effect in a microstructured fiber. The fiber was fabricated by drilling holes in a silica rod and subsequent drawing of a fiber with output diameter of 125 /spl mu/m. The threshold intensity of laser radiation and some features of catastrophic damage differ strongly from those for conventional ...

Capacity Limits of Optical Fiber Networks

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2010
We describe a method to estimate the capacity limit of fiber-optic communication systems (or ¿fiber channels¿) based on information theory. This paper is divided into two parts.

Fiber sensing with photorefractive fiber

SPIE Proceedings, 2002
Optical fibers have been widely used for transmitting temporal signal. However, the transmission of spatial signal has not been fully exploited. Although multimode fiber has a large space-bandwidth product, transmitting spatial signals by using a fiber is rather difficult.
