No slices on the space of generalized connections

open access: yes, 1997
On a fiber bundle without structure group the action of the gauge group (the group of all fiber respecting diffeomorphisms) on the space of (generalized) connections is shown not to admit slices.Comment: AmSTeX, diag.tex, 7 ...

Complete connections on fiber bundles [PDF]

open access: yesIndagationes Mathematicae, 2016
Every smooth fiber bundle admits a complete (Ehresmann) connection. This result appears in several references, with a proof on which we have found a gap, that does not seem possible to remedy. In this note we provide a definite proof for this fact, explain the problem with the previous one, and illustrate with examples.

Heterostructure‐Specific Toughening Mechanisms in Metallic Laminates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study highlights how various aspects of the heterostructural design of metallic laminates can be specifically tailored to achieve improved fracture resistance for damage‐tolerant designs of cyclically stressed components. Based on results from in situ fatigue crack growth tests, a comprehensive overview of the formation and development of ...

Can Local Stress Enhancement Induce Stability in Fracture Processes? Part I: Apparent Stability

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2019
By comparing the evolution of the local and equal load sharing fiber bundle models, we point out the paradoxical result that stresses seem to make the local load sharing model stable when the equal load sharing model is not.

Enhanced Mechanical and Shape Memory Properties of Laser Direct Energy Deposited CoCrFeMn High Entropy Alloy by Carbon Addition

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Feasibility of improving the mechanical and shape‐memory properties of a CoCrFeMn high‐entropy alloy through carbon addition is investigated. The recovery strain of the carbon‐containing alloy is approximately four to five times higher than that of the carbon‐free alloy.
