Design of a Tapered Lens for Semiconductor Laser to Single-Mode Fiber Coupling

open access: yes, 2004
The theoretical investigation of the coupling efficiency of a laser diode to a single mode fiber via a hemispherical lens on the tip of the tapered fiber in the presence of possible transverse offset and angular mismatch is reported.Without the ...

Efficient low-threshold lasers based on an erbium-doped holey fiber [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We report experimental results on the continuous-wave lasers based on a small core erbium-doped holey fiber. In a simple Fabry-Perot-type cavity with high output coupling, we demonstrate low-threshold (0.55 mW) high slope-efficiency (57.3%) operation ...

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.

Light‐Actuated Fiber‐Climbing Inchworm Robot Toward Endoluminal Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A kirigami‐inspired soft inchworm robot harnesses optical energy from a customized side‐emitting optical fiber, guaranteeing its propulsion along the fiber body. The wavelength‐selective responsiveness of dye‐functionalized liquid crystal elastomers and the application of temporal illumination patterns enable sequential control of robot components. The

FIBER SENSING DEVICES BASED ON CORE-CLADDING MODE COUPLING FOR ENHANCED OVERLAP OF EVANESCENT FIELD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
"In this thesis various techniques to enhance the interaction of the evanescent waves in an optical fiber with the surrounding media are investigated. In most cases the coupling and overlapping between core cladding modes were exploited.
