Size-dependent retention of elongate mineral particles in human lungs: modeling and implications for risk assessment

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
IntroductionLung deposition of elongate amphibole particles is an important process impacting the risk of cancer. There is, however, a significant gap in scientific literature characterizing the role of particle size in the differences observed for ...

Investigation of the Fiber Length and the Mechanical Properties of Waste Recycled from Continuous Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polypropylene

open access: yesRecycling, 2023
This paper explores the mechanical recycling of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) waste into injection molded products, focusing on the influence of recycling parameters on fiber length and mechanical properties.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Comparative analysis of the DFB fiber laser and fiber-optic interferometric strain sensors

open access: yes, 2007
The DFB fiber laser strain sensor is shown to provide an improvement in the minimum detectable length change by a factor of 275 at 2 kHz for an applied strain when compared with an interferometric sensor interrogated by at equivalent DFB laser.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Wavelength conversion in a short length of a solid lead-silicate fibre

open access: yes, 2010
We experimentally demonstrate a four-wave-mixing-based wavelength conversion scheme at 1.55 µm using a 1.1-m length of highly nonlinear, dispersion tailored W-type lead–silicate optical ...

Validation of Fiber Breakage in Simple Shear Flow with Direct Fiber Simulation

open access: yes, 2020
This study aims to use particle level simulation to simulate the breakage behavior of glass fibers subjected to simple shear flow. Each fiber is represented as a chain of rods that experience hydrodynamic, interaction, and elastic effects.

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.
