Functional maturation of tactile sensory fibers in the kitten

The maturation of tactile coding capacities was investigated in sensory fibers supplying the forelimb footpads in anesthetized kittens. Fibers were isolated by microdissection from the median or ulnar nerves of neonatal kittens (1st to 5th postnatal day) and kittens in the age categories 10-15, 25-30, 55-63, and 83-90 days.

The distribution of myelinated nerve fibers in the mature opossum esophagus

Myelination of nerve fibers could be important in establishing normal esophageal peristalsis. We therefore examined the general distribution and the age of appearance of myelinated nerve fibers in the smooth-muscle part of the esophagus of the American opossum. Tissues stained with thionein and Sudan black B were examined by light microscopy.

Delay in the maturation of muscle fibers in infants with congenital hypotonia

Muscle biopsies of hypotonic children have shown delayed maturation of a fetal type of muscle fibers: subsarcolemmal halo devoid of activity for mitochondrial dehydrogenases, type II predominance and in some cases abnormal dispersion of fiber diameter.
