Fiber optics in SHIVA [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
SHIVA is a twenty arm laser which is controlled with a network of fifty computers, interconnected with digital fiber optic links. Three different fiber optic systems employed on the Shiva laser will be described.

Non‐Uniform Programmable Photonic Waveguide Meshes

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Integrating defect cells into uniform hexagonal waveguide meshes overcomes the fundamental spectral and temporal limitations of programmable photonics. By leveraging the Vernier effect through non‐uniform coupled cavities, this architecture achieves a tenfold increase in free spectral range and ultra‐fast sampling times, paving the way for next ...

Biomimetic acoustic perception via chip-scale dual-soliton microcombs

open access: yeseLight
Acoustic perception is a fairly basic but extraordinary feature in nature, relying on multidimensional signal processing for detection, localization, and recognition.

Optical Skyrmions with Tunable or Reconfigurable Topology Using Spin‐Decoupled Metaoptics

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
The work introduces advanced optical elements capable of generating and dynamically reconfiguring complex light patterns known as optical skyrmions. By precisely shaping light polarization at the nanoscale, a single engineered metasurface can generate and manipulate robust and tunable polarization textures in an efficient and scalable way.

Conservation laws, stability analysis, and dynamics of dispersive optical soliton solutions for higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger model with applications in single-mode optical fibers

open access: yesAIP Advances
The propagation of ultra-short light pulses in a monomode optical fiber is governed by a higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which constitutes its foundation.

Broadband Parametric Amplification in AlGaAs‐on‐Insulator Nanowaveguides

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Harnessing the exceptional nonlinearity of AlGaAs‐on‐insulator nanowaveguides, four‐wave‐mixing parametric amplification achieves a record net on‐chip gain of 56 dB and a gain bandwidth exceeding 415 nm at telecom wavelengths. These results establish AlGaAsOI as a powerful platform for compact, high‐performance integrated nonlinear optical ...

In Situ Acoustic Monitoring of Focused Femtosecond Pulse Duration in Air

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Air‐breakdown acoustics at the laser focus is used to determine femtosecond pulse duration with a simple USB microphone. By chirp‐tuning and compressing 1030 nm pulses from 241 to 50 fs, the acoustic amplitude scales inversely proportional to the square root of the pulse duration, enabling in situ readout over 50 fs–5 ps—crucial for precise pulse ...

Optical‐to‐Microcomb Stability Transfer for Ultrastable Timing and Microwave/Millimeter‐Wave Generation

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a high‐fidelity stability transfer from an optical reference to a high‐repetition‐rate microcomb using a mode‐locked laser bridge. By employing electro‐optic sampling timing detection, femtosecond‐level synchronization and 10−18‐level fractional frequency stability are achieved.
