Optical fibers for communication
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1973The transparency of glass fibers in the visible and near infrared-improved beyond all expectations by recent breakthroughs-seems now sufficient to transmit optical signals unprocessed over miles. No wonder that efforts have intensified all over the world to utilize fibers in future communication systems.

Holographic RAM for optical fiber communications
2000 Optical Data Storage. Conference Digest (Cat. No.00TH8491), 2000A highly efficient holographic RAM operating at optical communication wavelengths is presented. It exploits a two-color technique by recording digital bytes at 488 nm and retrieving the same information at 1550 nm. A larger number of stored holograms can be easily achieved in small size crystals in order to develop a realistic device.

Fibers for Optical Communications
Advanced Materials, 1993Low‐loss optical fibers based on silica now have a transmission loss value approaching the theoretical limit, and thus attention has turned to other materials. Fibers for optical communications are reviewed in general, and the methods of loss reduction in silica‐based fibers are discussed.

Fiber optical communication is based on the principle of light transmission through a fine glass fiber by total internal reflection. A first demonstration of the guiding of light by total internal reflection was given by John Tyndall in 1870. In front of an audience of the Royal Academy of London, he demonstrated that light illuminating the top surface
