Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Hollow Core Antiresonant Fiber With Radially Asymmetric Nodeless Claddings

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2018
We propose and numerically study a novel type of hollow core antiresonant fiber with a single layer of nodeless radially asymmetric cladding tubes, i.e., the cladding tube presents a bulb-like shape, that the local cladding curvature radius at the core ...

Nanomechanical optical fiber with embedded electrodes actuated by joule heating

open access: yes, 2014
Nanomechanical optical fibers with metal electrodes embedded in the jacket were fabricated by a multi-material co-draw technique. At the center of the fibers, two glass cores suspended by thin membranes and surrounded by air form a directional coupler ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Potential of the active heat pulse method with fiber optic temperature sensing for estimation of water content and infiltration in agricultural soils

open access: yes, 2010
The principle of temperature measurement along a fiber optic cable is based on the thermal sensitivity of the relative intensities of backscattered Raman Stokes and anti Stokes photons that arise from collisions with electrons in the core of the glass ...

Efficient large-scale multiplexing of fiber Bragg grating and fiber Fabry-Perot sensors for structural health monitoring applications

open access: yes, 2006
Fiber Bragg gratings have been demonstrated as a versatile sensor for structural health monitoring. We present an efficient and cost effective multiplexing method for fiber Bragg grating and fiber Fabry-Perot sensors based on a broadband mode-locked ...
