Functionality and Storage Evaluation of Fish Freshness Indicators Based on the Incorporation of Anthocyanins Extracted From Winery Grape Pomace Into Polyvinyl Alcohol/Starch Films

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, Volume 38, Issue 10, Page 801-824, October 2025.
Smart indicators were composed of polyvinyl alcohol and starch, infused with anthocyanins extracted from winery residues based on the solvent casting method. The developed films were characterised for microstructure integrity, water affinity properties and colour‐changing abilities.

Effects of planting methods and fungicide seed application on sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid) growth and yield

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 8, Issue 3, September 2025.
Abstract Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid) manual planting in Florida faces challenges due to labor shortages. Even though mechanical planting offers potential benefits, concerns persist about its impact on soil‐borne diseases and crop establishment. To address these concerns, two on‐farm trials using split‐plot design determine the effects of planting

Larger Fish Have Larger Brains With More Neurons Across but Not Within Cohorts Raised in Different Growth Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 533, Issue 9, September 2025.
Teles et al. propose a model of brain evolution that explains how come fish with larger bodies have larger brains with more neurons across cohorts raised in different growth conditions, while individuals within a cohort do not, mimicking the different findings across and within species, respectively.

Optical Micromanipulations Based on Model Predictive Control of Thermoviscous Flows

open access: yesSmall, Volume 21, Issue 38, September 25, 2025.
Optofluidic manipulations of colloids are enabled by model predictive control of laser‐induced thermoviscous flows. This method is shown to be successful in controlling up to nine microparticles in both deterministic simulations and experiments via the sequential application of analytically tractable flow fields.

Carbonylation of hair proteins: A robust biomarker of molecular and structural oxidative damage in hair fibres

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, Volume 47, Issue 4, Page 604-625, August 2025.
The protein carbonylation biomarker is validated as reliable molecular damage marker to monitor hair oxidative damage (chemical and photo oxidation). It is slightly more sensitive than the cysteic acid in the case of photochemical oxidation and allows to geolocate qualitatively and quantitatively the oxidation within the hair fibre substructures ...

Femtosecond Direct Laser Writing of Conductive and Electrically Switchable PEDOT:PSS Optical Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 13, Issue 15, May 27, 2025.
Commercial femtosecond direct laser writing (Nanoscribe GT) is utilized to fabricate electrically switchable PEDOT:PSS nanostructures on ITO‐coated glass substrates, as well as underneath and on top of 3D‐printed structures and demonstrates beam‐switching at 1550 nm. Abstract Microscale three‐dimensional (3D)‐printing, with its remarkable precision and

Comparison of surface characteristics of denture base resin materials with two surface treatment protocols and simulated brushing

open access: yesJournal of Prosthodontics, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 58-67, January 2025.
Abstract Purpose To investigate the effects of 4 denture base materials, 2 surface treatment protocols, and simulated brushing (SB) on the surface hardness, surface roughness, surface gloss, and the surface loss of denture base materials. Materials and Methods Four denture base resin material groups (compression‐molded, injection‐molded, 3D‐printed ...

Water Soluble Rare‐Earth(III) based Coordination Polymers with Luminescence Versatility in Various Media: Reaching the Sky of Quantum Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 12, Issue 36, December 20, 2024.
The preparation and detailed characterization of four rare‐earth(III) based coordination polymers (CPs) showing high photoluminescence quantum yields in solid state is reported. These compounds present good water solubility that renders brightly emitting solutions and good dispersibility into thin‐films.

Adsorber Charge Dominates over Hydrophobic or Fluorophilic Functionalization in Influencing Adsorption of PFCA onto Polystyrene Resins

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 11, Issue 32, November 14, 2024.
By comparing a series of functionalized anion exchange resins it is shown that the length and fluorination of the functional side chain of the resin exhibited only a minor impact on its perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA) removal efficiency. This is further corroborated by no significant removal of PFCA by the respective uncharged polystyrene resins ...
