Fiber orientation and orientation factors in steel fiber‐reinforced concrete beams with hybrid fibers: A critical review

open access: yesStructural Concrete
AbstractFiber orientation is of paramount importance for the design of fiber‐reinforced concrete (FRC) structural elements, because it markedly influences the postcracking properties of such material. For this reason, structural codes introduce orientation factors which aim to correlate the real mechanical properties of the structural element with the ...

Engineered Mycelial Scaffolds With Tunable Ultraviolet Protection, Wettability, Thermal Stability, and Spatial Mechanics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Fungal mycelia grown into biodegradable scaffolds and infused with titania nanoparticles show enhanced ultraviolet shielding, thermal protection, and surface nonwettability. Properties were tuned by drying methods, revealing structure–function relationships.

Effect Of Non Dental Glass Fiber Orientation On Transverse Strength Of Dental Fiber Reinforced Composite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
FRC is widely used in dentistry especially for dental bridges construction. E glass fiber is commonly used because it has good properties and good bonding with polymers. Its availability is limited and its price quite expensive in Indonesia.

Stability calculations for the ytterbium-doped fiber laser passively mode-locked through nonlinear polarization rotation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We investigate theoretically a fiber laser passively mode-locked with nonlinear polarization rotation. A unidirectional ring cavity is considered with a polarizer placed between two sets of a halfwave plate and a quarterwave plate.

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Orientation of Carbon Fibers in Copper matrix Produced by Powder Injection Molding

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2014
Fiber orientation is a big challenge in short fiber reinforced composites. Powder injection molding (PIM) process has some intrinsic fiber alignment associated with it.

3D Fiber Orientation in Atherosclerotic Carotid Plaques

open access: yesJournal of Structural Biology, 2017
Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is the primary trigger of fatal cardiovascular events. Fibrillar collagen in atherosclerotic plaques and their directionality are anticipated to play a crucial role in plaque rupture. This study aimed assessing 3D fiber orientations and architecture in atherosclerotic plaques for the first time. Seven carotid plaques were
