Research and development carried out by the ISF Welding and Joining Institute of RWTH Aachen University has proven that combining high power laser and low vacuum atmosphere provides a welding performance and quality, which is comparable to electron beam welding. The developed welding machines are still using a beam forming which takes place outside the

Fiber–fiber interaction in concentrated suspensions: Disperse fibers
Journal of Rheology, 1999A hypothesis for fiber–fiber interaction in planar randomly oriented concentrated fiber suspensions is proposed and tested. The idea is that at sufficiently high fiber concentrations, friction and lubrication at fiber–fiber contact points are the dominant interaction mechanisms.

Fiber Devices Using Polarization-Maintaining Fibers
SPIE Proceedings, 1987Abstract Fiber devices using polarization-maintaining fibers called PANDA fibers are presented. They are polarization-maintaining couplers and polarization-splitting couplers, optical isolators and optical circulators, and multi/demultiplexers designed for 1.3 μm wavelength. Crosstalk of-32 dB and excess loss of 0.03 dB for the polarization-maintaining

Fiber fuse effect in microstructured fibers
OFC 2003 Optical Fiber Communications Conference, 2003., 2003In this paper we report the first observation of the fuse effect in a microstructured fiber. The fiber was fabricated by drilling holes in a silica rod and subsequent drawing of a fiber with output diameter of 125 /spl mu/m. The threshold intensity of laser radiation and some features of catastrophic damage differ strongly from those for conventional ...

All-fiber mode-locked fiber laser
Optics Letters, 2007An environmentally stable mode-locked fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation is experimentally demonstrated. The laser is based on a novel laser configuration that has negligible low-power steady-state reflectivity from one side and, consequently, no CW gain.

Fiber-optic gyroscope with polarization-holding fiber
Optics Letters, 1983A fiber gyroscope is reported that uses polarization-holding fiber in the coil, the phase modulator, and the coupler. The random-drift coefficient, calculated from rms noise levels, was 8.10(-4) deg/ radicalh, within a factor of 2 of an experimentally determined quantum and thermal limit. White-noise behavior was observed for integration time constants

> MODERN ALCHEMY is changing not base metals, but polymers into gold. The manufacture of polymer fibers is one of today's fastest-expanding industries. With increasing demands for fibers for clothing, tires, space applications and a variety of other needs, the consumption of both natural and man-made fibers has increased by leaps and bounds during the ...
