On fibred adjunctions and completeness for fibred categories
1994We show how the completeness and cocompleteness of the total category of a fibration can be inferred from that of the fibre categories and its base. Our results are somewhat stronger than those in [BGT91] and they are obtained as direct consequences of an important property of general fibred adjunctions.

Mammalian hair fibres can be structurally divided into three main components: a cuticle, cortex and sometimes a medulla. The cuticle consists of a thin layer of overlapping cells on the surface of the fibre, constituting around 10% of the total fibre weight. The cortex makes up the remaining 86-90% and is made up of axially aligned spindle-shaped cells

Sensors which rely on the external modulation of the properties of an optical fibre (intrinsic sensors) are receiving much attention since they can be made extremely sensitive, and can be used for distributed measurements. Distributed sensing provides some particularly exciting prospects for acoustic, magnetic and electric field monitoring.

The physical properties and the chemical variety of the substances which make up the plant cell wall are inadequately described by any one term such as "fibre". It would seem that an understanding of the role of the unavailable carbohydrates and lignin in the diet in the functioning of the gastro-intestinal tract and on possible pathological process ...

Fibre amplifiers and fibre lasers
Proceedings of 5th European Quantum Electronics Conference, 1994The erbium-doped fibre amplifier has effectively banished loss from the lexicon of the optical communications designer and has changed the course of telecommunications. Fibre lasers are beginning to have a similar impact, providing spectral coverage from 400 nm to beyond 3 μm, pulse widths of a few tens of fs and output powers up to 5W. Photorefractive
