Biomechanics of a bone-periodontal ligament-tooth fibrous joint. [PDF]

open access: greenJ Biomech, 2013
This study investigates bone-tooth association under compression to identify strain amplified sites within the bone-periodontal ligament (PDL)-tooth fibrous joint. Our results indicate that the biomechanical response of the joint is due to a combinatorial response of the constitutive properties of organic, inorganic, and fluid components.

The plastic nature of the human bone-periodontal ligament-tooth fibrous joint. [PDF]

open access: greenBone, 2013
This study investigates bony protrusions within a narrowed periodontal ligament space (PDL-space) of a human bone-PDL-tooth fibrous joint by mapping structural, biochemical, and mechanical heterogeneity. Higher resolution structural characterization was achieved via complementary atomic force microscopy (AFM), nano-transmission X-ray microscopy (nano ...

In situ compressive loading and correlative noninvasive imaging of the bone-periodontal ligament-tooth fibrous joint. [PDF]

open access: bronzeJ Vis Exp, 2014
This study demonstrates a novel biomechanics testing protocol. The advantage of this protocol includes the use of an in situ loading device coupled to a high resolution X-ray microscope, thus enabling visualization of internal structural elements under ...

Coculture of bovine cartilage with synovium and fibrous joint capsule increases aggrecanase and matrix metalloproteinase activity. [PDF]

open access: goldArthritis Res Ther, 2017
BackgroundA hallmark of osteoarthritis is increased proteolytic cleavage of aggrecan. Cross talk between cartilage and the synovium + joint capsule (SJC) can drive cartilage degradation by activating proteases in both tissues.

Degenerative joint disease in the temporomandibular joint with fibrous ankylosis in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) [PDF]

open access: diamondLaboratory Animal Research, 2020
Background Ankylosis in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is known to have various etiologies in veterinary medicine. We observed a case of fibrous ankylosis of the TMJ in a newly imported rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta).

Functional Adaptation of LPS‐affected Dentoalveolar Fibrous Joints in Rats

open access: greenJournal of Periodontal Research, 2021
INTRODUCTION The functional interplay between cementum of the root and alveolar bone of the socket is tuned by a uniquely positioned 70-80 µm wide fibrous and lubricious ligament in a dentoalveolar joint (DAJ). In this study, structural and biomechanical

Inhibition of fibrous adhesion formation in the temporomandibular joint of tenascin-C knockout mice

open access: goldEuropean Journal of Histochemistry, 2014
Tenascin-C (TNC) is a large hexameric extracellular matrix glycoprotein that is expressed in developing organs and tumors. It has been reported that TNC is expressed in inflamed synovial membranes and deformed discs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ ...

PDGFRα signaling regulates cartilage and fibrous tissue differentiation during synovial joint development [PDF]

open access: goldNature Communications
Synovial joints develop from mesenchymal structures called interzones, with progenitor cells differentiating into specialized cartilaginous and fibrous tissues of the joint.

Using Microphysiological System for the Development of Treatments for Joint Inflammation and Associated Cartilage Loss—A Pilot Study

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2023
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful and disabling joint disease affecting millions worldwide. The lack of clinically relevant models limits our ability to predict therapeutic outcomes prior to clinical trials, where most drugs fail.

Bilateral asymptomatic fibrous-ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint associated with rheumatoid arthritis: a case report [PDF]

open access: goldBrazilian Dental Journal, 2012
The American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) defines ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as a restriction of movements due to intracapsular fibrous adhesions, fibrous changes in capsular ligaments (fibrous-ankylosis) and osseous mass ...
