Biocompatibility and healing patterns in experimentally induced canine tibial fractures using Pedicle screw‐Rod external fixation

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that using a Pedicle screw‐Rod configuration for the external fixation of non‐articular tibial osteotomy aligns well with the principles of biological osteosynthesis, resulting in secondary bone healing characterized by callus formation and neovascularization.

CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF BIOMINERALISATION IN A SILICIFYING HAPTOPHYTE PRYMNESIUM NEOLEPIS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Full version unavailable due to 3rd party copyright restrictions.Haptophytes are renowned for the most prominent and biogeochemically important group of marine calcifiers: coccolithophores. The unexpected discovery of a unique, silicifying member of this

Phospho1 deficiency transiently modifies bone architecture yet produces consistent modification in osteocyte differentiation and vascular porosity with ageing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
PHOSPHO1 is one of principal proteins involved in initiating bone matrix mineralisation. Recent studies have found that Phospho1 KO mice (Phospho1-R74X) display multiple skeletal abnormalities with spontaneous fractures, bowed long bones, osteomalacia ...

Segmentation of cortical bone, trabecular bone, and medullary pores from micro‐CT images using 2D and 3D deep learning models

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Computed tomography (CT) enables rapid imaging of large‐scale studies of bone, but those datasets typically require manual segmentation, which is time‐consuming and prone to error. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer an automated solution, achieving superior performance on image data.

Review of the anatomical basis for predicting plutonium alpha particle radiation induced osteogenic cancers

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Plutonium was discovered and first synthesized in the early 1940's. Several isotopes of plutonium are used in nuclear technologies, 238Pu for heat generation and 239Pu for energy production and weapons. Both isotopes emit alpha particles, which pose a significant radiation hazard when incorporated into the body.

Several occurrences of osteomyelitis in dinosaurs from a site in the Bauru Group, Cretaceous of Southeast Brazil

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigates the occurrence of osteomyelitis in non‐avian dinosaurs, focusing on the Ibirá locality, a site with a high incidence of this pathological condition. We analyzed six new osteopathic sauropod specimens from the Upper Cretaceous of Brazil.

Spina bifida-predisposing heterozygous mutations in Planar Cell Polarity genes and Zic2 reduce bone mass in young mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Fractures are a common comorbidity in children with the neural tube defect (NTD) spina bifida. Mutations in the Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway contribute to NTDs in humans and mice, but whether this pathway independently determines bone mass is ...
