Field-aligned Currents in the Undisturbed Polar Ionosphere

pure and applied geophysics, 1989
Field-aligned currents, FAC’s, which couple ionospheric currents at high latitudes with magnetospheric currents have become an essential cornerstone to our understanding of plasma dynamics in the polar region and in the earth’s magnetosphere. Initial investigators of polar electrodynamics including the aurora were unable to distinguish between the ...

Field-aligned currents and the auroral electrojet

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1974
A Nike Tomahawk with fields and particles payload was launched on Nov. 18, 1970, over a strong westward electrojet current and auroral forms moving rapidly to the east. Electron fluxes moving up and down the magnetic field lines were measured. Upward-moving electrons below 1-keV energy were dominant and were equivalent to a net downward electric ...

Field-aligned currents above an auroral arc

Planetary and Space Science, 1980
Abstract Simultaneous observations of precipitating electrons and protons in the energy range from 15 eV to 35 keV and magnetic field variations were made onboard a sounding rocket payload launched from the Andoya Rocket Range. The electric current density deduced from the electron precipitation observed during the passage over an auroral arc was ...

Generation of Field Aligned Current During Substorm

1979
A mechanism for the generation of field aligned currents during magnetospheric substorms is presented. The energy which is injected to the geomagnetic tail is converted into plasma flow energy in solar and anti-solar directions. When the flow meets the inner magnetosphere, a viscous interaction occurs.

Field Aligned Currents in the Magnetosphere

1974
This paper deals with field aligned currents in general. Specific topics are: a brief review of the well established features; new results from the triaxial magnetometer experiment on the TRIAD satellite; comparison of the results from a variety of studies; relation of field aligned currents to other areas of research; and comments on future studies.

Polar magnetic disturbances and field-aligned currents

Space Science Reviews, 1982
The results of research of the morphology and physics of polar magnetic disturbances and their connection with three-dimensional magnetospheric currents are reviewed. Magnetic disturbance current systems are examined, also their relation to solar wind parameters and magnetic activity level and their seasonal dependence.

Minimization of field-aligned current and flow

Journal of Plasma Physics, 2005
The radial profiles of current and flow permitted by the relaxed states of a two-fluid cylindrical plasma system using double Beltrami formulation are presented. The relaxed states are then compared with those of the internal conductor plasma configuration.

Terrestrial ionospheric signatures of field-aligned currents

1990
The occurrence of traveling field-aligned current filaments and twin-vortex patterns is suggested to be related to sudden changes in solar wind dynamic pressure and/or the IMF. Greenland magnetometer observations of the cleft region magnetic perturbations associated with small-scale twin-vortex patterns show that these events occur on both sides of the
