Field Measurements of Dune Erosion

open access: yesCoastal Engineering 1986, 1986
A series of field experiments was made to evaluate the use of a laboratory derived relationship between the force in the wave uprush and the erosion of beach dunes. Measurements of the swash velocity and height at the dune face were used to compute a specific force parameter. This force term was correlated with the specific erosion of the dune.

Emerging experimental and computational methods for studying redox‐regulated structural transitions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Redox reactions can reshape proteins and alter how they behave in cells, with important consequences for health and disease. This review explores emerging experimental and computational approaches for discovering these redox‐sensitive protein switches, revealing their structural effects, and predicting their behavior, opening new opportunities to ...

Measure fields for function approximation [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, 1995
The computation of a piecewise smooth function that approximates a finite set of data points may be decomposed into two decoupled tasks: 1) the computation of the locally smooth models, and hence, the segmentation of the data into classes that consist of the sets of points best approximated by each model; 2) the computation of the normalized ...

Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.

Temporal Convolutional Neural Network Analysis of Magnetocardiography Signals for Detection of Pulmonary Hypertension

open access: yesBioengineering
Non-invasive methods used for PH detection in clinical practice have several limitations. The combination of high spatiotemporal sensitivity magnetocardiography (MCG) and artificial intelligence algorithms may offer an accurate approach for PH detection.

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Effects of Hypomagnetic Field Environment on Tumor Progression and Gut Microbiota in LLC Tumor-Bearing Mice

open access: yesBiology
The tumor microenvironment interacts bidirectionally with systemic host factors, including the gut microbiota. However, it remains unclear whether physical environmental stimuli, such as a hypomagnetic field (HMF), can modulate tumor progression and ...

Chiral separation of chloroalkanes with the chromatographic column onboard Martian rovers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Computer image of the Rosalind Franklin Rover of ESA's ExoMars mission. ExoMars is scheduled to land on planet Mars in Oxia Planum in 2029. This area represents an interesting spot to look for biosignatures. Investigations of ExoMars include measurement on molecular chirality. We show that chiral chloroalkanes, that have been identified on Mars, can be

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...
