Radiative Thermal Rectification between SiC and SiO2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
By means of fluctuationnal electrodynamics, we calculate radiative heat flux between two pla-nar materials respectively made of SiC and SiO2. More specifically, we focus on a first (direct) situation where one of the two materials (for example SiC) is at

Simulated Dynamical Weakening and Abelian Avalanches in Mean-Field Driven Threshold Models

open access: yes, 2004
Mean-field coupled lattice maps are used to approximate the physics of driven threshold systems with long range interactions. However, they are incapable of modeling specific features of the dynamic instability responsible for generating avalanches. Here

Effect of electro discharge machining (EDM) on the AISI316L SS white layer microstructure and corrosion resistance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The localised corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels is strongly influenced by the quality of finished surface. EDM machining induces substantial changes by the high thermal gradients generated by electric sparks.

Weakened field equations in General Relativity admitting an ‘unphysical’ metric [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications in Mathematical Physics, 1967
Certain weakened vacuum field equations which have been suggested as alternatives to the vacuum field equations of General Relativity are investigated. It is shown that they each possess a solution which corresponds to an isolated mass at the origin which repels test particles.

A damage model based on failure threshold weakening

open access: yes, 2010
A variety of studies have modeled the physics of material deformation and damage as examples of generalized phase transitions, involving either critical phenomena or spinodal nucleation.

Vanishing viscosities and error estimate for a Cahn-Hilliard type phase field system related to tumor growth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this paper we perform an asymptotic analysis for two different vanishing viscosity coefficients occurring in a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type that was recently introduced in order to approximate a tumor growth model. In particular, we extend

Stratification of sunspot umbral dots from inversion of Stokes profiles recorded by Hinode

open access: yes, 2008
This work aims to constrain the physical nature of umbral dots (UDs) using high-resolution spectropolarimetry. Full Stokes spectra recorded by the spectropolarimeter on Hinode of 51 UDs in a sunspot close to the disk center are analyzed.

A Modified Phase-Locked Loop with Parameter Self-Tuning Used in the Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs)

open access: yesMathematics
This paper proposes a sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), focusing on rotor flux position estimation based on back-electromotive force (back-EMF) signals. The limitations of conventional phase-

Hall coefficient and magnetoresistance of 2D spin-polarized electron systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Recent measurements of the 2D Hall resistance show that the Hall coefficient is independent of the applied in-plane magnetic field, i.e., the spin-polarization of the system.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
