Perceived patterns and drivers of deagrarianization: a case study of Ambros and Maramanzhi villages, South Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems
Access to arable land has the potential to address the challenges of poverty, unemployment and household food insecurity in South Africa. Despite these opportunities and limited income sources, particularly in former homelands of the country, smallholder

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

On the Borderline of Fields and Hyperfields

open access: yesMathematics, 2023
The hyperfield came into being due to a mathematical necessity that appeared during the study of the valuation theory of the fields by M. Krasner, who also defined the hyperring, which is related to the hyperfield in the same way as the ring is related ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

A Novel Algebraic System in Quantum Field Theory

open access: yesAppliedMath, 2023
An algebraic system is introduced which is very useful for performing scattering calculations in quantum field theory. It is the set of all real numbers greater than or equal to −m2 with parity designation and a special rule for addition and subtraction,

CHARMM General Force Field (CGenFF): A force field for drug-like molecules compatible with the CHARMM all-atom additive biological force fields

open access: yesJournal of Computational Chemistry, 2009
The widely used CHARMM additive all‐atom force field includes parameters for proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. In the present article, an extension of the CHARMM force field to drug‐like molecules is presented.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
