Figural Aftereffects as Optical Illusions?

open access: closedThe American Journal of Psychology, 1972
Ganz's theory of figural aftereffects is criticized on these grounds: that the 'attraction effect' he described is an artifact of figural dynamics during the inspection period; that aftereffects cannot be optical illusions between test figure and the afterimage of inspection figure because aftereffects are found without such afterimages; and that ...

Individual differences in figural aftereffects.

open access: closedPsychological Bulletin, 1970
Discusses recent experiments which indicate that the magnitude of a figural aftereffect is dependent on decision processes in addition to stimulus variables. The influence of judgment time, expectation, and instructional criterion on figural aftereffect is examined.

Formulas for Measuring Recovery from Figural Aftereffects

open access: closedPerceptual and Motor Skills, 1959
There has recently been some confusion about the measurement of the persistence of kinesthetic and visual figural aftereffects. Wertheimer and Leventhal (1957) have correctly pointed out that if, for example, it takes a person with a large initial aftereffect (displacement) longer to dissipate the aftereffect than a person with a small initial ...

Attentional Modulation of a Figural Aftereffect

open access: closedPerception, 1992
Evidence is reported that indicates that adaptation of the Schroder staircase is affected by attention. In previous work it has been shown that if subjects adapt to an unambiguous staircase, responses to an ambiguous test figure are biased towards the opposing perspective.

Tactile and Kinesthetic Influences on Visual Figural Aftereffects

open access: closedPerceptual and Motor Skills, 1970
12 Ss were presented with a bent line I (inspection) figure followed by a straight line T (test) figure under four different conditions in order to produce a FAE of a bent line. In the visual condition S saw the I figure and then the T figure. In the tactile condition S held a curved bar and viewed the I figure simultaneously.

Personality and Drugs in Visual Figural Aftereffects

open access: closedInternational Journal of Psychology, 1981
Abstract The effects of dexedrine and phenobarbitone on visual figural aftereffect (VFAE) were examined in 32 postgraduate students selected after a preliminary testing with the Maudsley Personality Inventory. Calcium tablets were used as placebos. The subjects were repeatedly tested under each of the treatment conditions.
