A phenomenological figure of merit for photovoltaic materials

open access: yesJPhys Energy
I derive a figure of merit (FOM) $\Gamma_{\mathrm{PV}}$ to estimate the maximum efficiency attainable by a generic non-ideal photovoltaic (PV) absorber in a planar single-junction solar cell.

Heisenberg scaling based on population coding [PDF]

open access: yesQuantum
We study Heisenberg scaling of quantum metrology in the viewpoint of population coding. Although Fisher information has been used for a figure of merit to characterize Heisenberg scaling in quantum metrology, several studies pointed out it does not work ...

Combining antibody conjugates with cytotoxic and immune‐stimulating payloads maximizes anti‐cancer activity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Methods to improve antibody–drug conjugate (ADC) treatment durability in cancer therapy are needed. We utilized ADCs and immune‐stimulating antibody conjugates (ISACs), which are made from two non‐competitive antibodies, to enhance the entry of toxic payloads into cancer cells and deliver immunostimulatory agents into immune cells.

Tumor mutational burden as a determinant of metastatic dissemination patterns

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of genomic data to elucidate whether metastasis in certain organs share genetic characteristics regardless of cancer type. No robust mutational patterns were identified across different metastatic locations and cancer types.

Three-terminal semiconductor junction thermoelectric devices: improving performance

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2013
A three-terminal thermoelectric device based on a p–i–n semiconductor junction is proposed, where the intrinsic region is mounted onto what is typically a bosonic thermal terminal.

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

Polaritonic figure of merit of plane structures

open access: yesOptics Express, 2017
Based on the ability of plane structures to simultaneously optimize the propagation, confinement, and energy of surface plasmon-polaritons or surface phonon-polaritons, we develop the polaritonic figure of merit Z = βRΛ2/δ, where βR, Λ and δ are the longitudinal wave vector, propagation length, and penetration depth, respectively.

Impact of a senior research thesis on students' perceptions of scientific inquiry in distinct student populations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study addressed how a senior research thesis is perceived by undergraduate students. It assessed students' perception of research skills, epistemological beliefs, and career goals in Biochemistry (science) and BDC (science‐business) students. Completing a thesis improved confidence in research skills, resilience, scientific identity, closed gender‐

Optimizing plasmonic nanostructures array for high-performance sensing applications

open access: yesResults in Physics
The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon, influenced by the surrounding medium, has been widely employed in optical sensors. Traditional sensors focus on refractive index sensitivity (ηRIS) but neglect the broad spectral linewidth, thus ...

Erythropoietin modulates hepatic inflammation, glucose homeostasis, and soluble epoxide hydrolase and epoxides in high‐fat diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Erythropoietin administration suppresses hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) expression, leading to increased CYP‐derived epoxides. This is associated with a shift in hepatic macrophage polarization characterized by reduced M1 markers and increased M2 markers, along with reduced hepatic inflammation, suppressed hepatic lipogenesis, and attenuated ...
