Fijian students’ perceptions drawn on Indian popular culture: exploring cultural hybridity and the twice-removed-from-reality image of India

open access: yesCogent Arts & Humanities
Fiji, a multilingual and multicultural nation, is often termed ‘Little India’ where the Fijians of Indian descent (Indo-Fijians) have developed a new identity through cultural assimilation as well as accommodation.

Investigating shellfish deposition and landscape history at the Natia Beach site, Fiji [PDF]

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Export performance, governance, and economic growth: evidence from Fiji - a small and vulnerable economy

open access: yesCogent Economics & Finance, 2020
This article analyses the nexus between exports, established indicators of governance, and economic growth in Fiji. It finds that exports and governance co-operate to promote economic growth. The interplay between these variables is also meaningful.

Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,

Fijian infrastructural citizenship: spaces of electricity sharing and informal power grids in an informal settlement

open access: yesCogent Social Sciences, 2020
Infrastructure has historically been absent in informal settlements in Oceania. Oceanic governments have deliberately withheld infrastructure to these settlements denying them essential resources, human rights, and ways of life.
