Expression of Filaggrin and its Degradation Products in Human Skin Following Erythemal Doses of Ultraviolet B Irradiation

open access: yesActa Dermato-Venereologica, 2017
Epidermal filaggrin level is affected by ultraviolet B irradiation in animal and experimental models. This study examined the effect of ultraviolet B irradiation on epidermal filaggrin and natural moisturizing factors in vivo in healthy adults (n = 22 ...

Interplay of Staphylococcal and Host Proteases Promotes Skin Barrier Disruption in Netherton Syndrome. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Netherton syndrome (NS) is a monogenic skin disease resulting from loss of function of lymphoepithelial Kazal-type-related protease inhibitor (LEKTI-1).

Human and computational models of atopic dermatitis:A review and perspectives by an expert panel of the International Eczema Council [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent disease worldwide and is associated with systemic comorbidities representing a significant burden on patients, their families, and society. Therapeutic options for AD remain limited, in part because of a lack of well-

Divergent Paths: A Comprehensive Review of Mechanisms and Clinical Implications in Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are two common cutaneous chronic inflammatory diseases. Although they share similar immunological mechanisms, their clinical implications in the patient are different. This review compares both diseases from different points of view such as genetics, natural history, triggers of disease, and skin barrier defects

Filaggrin and eczema

open access: yesJournal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, 2008
Recent genetic findings demonstrate an important role for the epidermal protein filaggrin in the aetiology of atopic diseases, including asthma as well as eczema. Filaggrin is critical to the conversion of keratinocytes to the protein/lipid squames that compose the stratum corneum, the outermost barrier layer of the skin.

TSLP is a direct trigger for T cell migration in filaggrin-deficient skin equivalents

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Mutations in the gene encoding for filaggrin (FLG) are major predisposing factors for atopic dermatitis (AD). Besides genetic predisposition, immunological dysregulations considerably contribute to its pathophysiology.

Clinical presentation of atopic dermatitis by filaggrin gene mutation status during the first 7 years of life in a prospective cohort study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
BackgroundFilaggrin null mutations result in impaired skin barrier functions, increase the risk of early onset atopic dermatitis and lead to a more severe and chronic disease.

Organ culture and Reflectance Confocal Microscopy as new integrated tools for barrier rescue studies in inflammatory skin diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Here we present a new integrated approach to understand skin barrier recovery after physical (tape stripping, TS) or chemical (SDS) injury by combining human skin organ culture and Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM).

A review of skin microbiome and new challenges to cosmetic microbiome‐friendly formulations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, EarlyView.
Microbiome‐friendly concepts offer new perspectives for a healthy relationship between cosmetic use and the skin microbiome, especially the interaction of non‐biotic cosmetic ingredients with the skin, requiring further studies to clarify the dynamics between the skin microbiome and different classes of cosmetic ingredients.
