Amphibian Strategies Against Attacks by Flies: Host-Specificity and Threats. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Species interactions between Diptera flies and amphibians play a significant role in tropical ecosystems, but their ecology and evolution remain understudied. This review explores the costs flies impose on amphibians, such as pathogen transmission and disruption of communication systems, and highlights the evolutionary strategies employed by both ...

Identification and Molecular Characterization of Spirurid Nematode Associated With Giraffe Skin Disease in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Med Int
Giraffe skin disease (GSD) is an emerging skin condition mainly affecting adult and subadult populations of free‐ranging giraffe, including Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi) in the southern and northern protected areas (PAs) in Tanzania. Even though GSD has been described in Tanzania, the specific involvement of the spirurid nematode as the ...

Investigation on key aspects of mating biology in the mosquito Aedes koreicus

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 826-833, December 2023., 2023
A laboratory colony of Aedes koreicus derived from the area of initial introduction and establishment in Italy did not display autogenic behaviour. We observed repeated attempts at insemination and an aggressive and disruptive behaviour of Aedes albopictus males towards Ae.

Filarial infections in lemurs: Evidence for a wide geographical distribution and low host specificity among lemur species

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Primatology, Volume 85, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
A microscopic analysis of 942 blood smears from Microcebus murinus, M. ravelobensis and two rodent species from northwestern Madagascar revealed the presence of an unnamed Onchocercidae species with low prevalence (1.0%−2.1%) in both mouse lemur species, but not in the rodents.

Pharmacological characterization of novel heteromeric GluCl subtypes from Caenorhabditis elegans and parasitic nematodes

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 179, Issue 6, Page 1264-1279, March 2022., 2022
Background and Purpose Macrocyclic lactones are the most widely used broad‐spectrum anthelmintic drugs for the treatment of parasitic nematodes affecting both human and animal health. Macrocyclic lactones are agonists of the nematode glutamate‐gated chloride channels (GluCls). However, for many important nematode species, the GluCls subunit composition

Molecular detection of zoonotic filarioids in Culex spp. from Portugal

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 35, Issue 3, Page 468-477, September 2021., 2021
First report of the occurrence of the DNA of Onchocerca lupi, Dirofilaria repens and Acanthocheilonema reconditum in Culex spp. from Portugal. Unidentified species of Filarioidea and Onchocercidae were detected in mosquitoes from Portugal. The detection of Wolbachia supergroup E in Culex laticinctus positive for O.

What's in your next-generation sequence data? An exploration of unmapped DNA and RNA sequence reads from the bovine reference individual. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BackgroundNext-generation sequencing projects commonly commence by aligning reads to a reference genome assembly. While improvements in alignment algorithms and computational hardware have greatly enhanced the efficiency and accuracy of alignments, a ...

Molecular analysis of blood-associated pathogens in European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) from Germany

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2022
European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) have not been investigated in large numbers for blood-associated pathogens in Germany, because wildcats, being a protected species, may not be hunted, and the collection of samples is therefore difficult ...
