Convex Curvature Effects on Film Cooling Adiabatic Effectiveness
Volume 3B: Heat Transfer, 2013Surface curvature is known to have significant effects on film cooling performance, with convex curvature inducing increased film effectiveness and concave curvature causing decreased film effectiveness. Generally, these curvature effects have been presumed to scale with 2r/d at the film cooling hole location, where r is the radius of curvature and d ...

Enhancement of Film Cooling Effectiveness Using Dean Vortices
Journal of turbomachinery, 2019Film cooling technology is widely used in gas turbines. With the additive manufacturing anticipated in the future, there will be more freedom in film cooling hole design. Exploiting this freedom, the present authors tried using curved holes to generate

Effect of Vortex Generators on Film Cooling Effectiveness
Journal of Turbomachinery, 2015Film cooling is often adopted, where coolant jets are ejected to form a protective layer on the surface against the hot combustor gases. The bending of jets in crossflow results in counter rotating vortex pair (CRVP), which is a cause for high jet lift-off and poor film cooling effectiveness in the near field.

Particulate Deposition Effects in Film Cooling Holes
Proceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2023The dust, sand, and other micron-sized particles in the atmosphere are usually drawn into the gas turbine and diverted into the secondary cooling air, which further travel to the internal cooling channel and are prone to deposit on the internal surfaces of the hot section due to elevated temperatures.

Influence on film cooling effectiveness of novel holes based on cylindrical configurations
Numerical Heat Transfer, Part A Applications, 2019In this study, four novel film cooling hole designs, all based on cylindrical holes, are numerically evaluated, and compared with those of a simple cylindrical hole and a laterally-diffused shaped hole.

Effect of Stagnation Regions on Film Cooling Effectiveness
Volume 4: Turbo Expo 2007, Parts A and B, 2007Over the last decades, researchers have investigated many aspects of film cooling. The present study investigates the impact of stagnation region created by a downstream airfoil on endwall film cooling effectiveness. Experimental measurements are presented for a single row of cylindrical holes inclined at 35° with hole length to diameter ratio, L/D = 7.

The Effect of Freestream Turbulence on Film Cooling Adiabatic Effectiveness
Volume 3: Turbo Expo 2002, Parts A and B, 2002The film-cooling performance of a flat plate in the presence of low and high freestream turbulence is investigated using liquid crystal thermography. High-resolution distributions of the adiabatic effectiveness are determined over the film-cooled surface of the flat plate using the hue method and image processing.

Adiabatic film cooling effectiveness contours are obtained experimentally with the use of temperature sensitive paint (TSP) on low thermal conductivity film cooled surfaces. The effects of blowing ratio, surface angle, and hole spacing are observed by testing four full-coverage arrays composed of cylindrical staggered holes all compounded at 45 deg ...
