Film Cooling Effectiveness for Short Film Cooling Holes Fed by a Narrow Plenum

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1999
The adiabatic, steady-state liquid crystal technique was used to measure surface adiabatic film cooling effectiveness values in the near-hole region X/D<10. A parametric study was conducted for a single row of short holes L/D⩽3 fed by a narrow plenum H/D=1.

Double-Jet Ejection of Cooling Air for Improved Film Cooling

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2006
Film cooling in gas turbines leads to aerodynamic mixing losses and reduced temperatures of the gas flow. Improvements of the gas turbine thermal efficiency can be achieved by reducing the cooling fluid amount and by establishing a more equal distribution of the cooling fluid along the surface.

The Cooling Index: An Integral Measure of Film Cooling Performance

Heat Transfer in Gas Turbines, 1994
Abstract A simple measure of film cooling performance is presented to aid the preliminary design of gas turbines. The Cooling Index, CI, is defined as the reduction in total heat load due to the film cooling divided by the baseline (no film cooling) heat load over a specified area of a turbine blade, ΔQ˙fc/Q˙bl.

The mechanics of film cooling

1954
Thin liquid wall films flowing under the influence of high-velocity turbulent gas streams were studied for the purpose of obtaining an understanding of the mechanics of film cooling. Conditions which insure liquid-film attachment to solid surfaces without loss of unevaporated liquid to the gas stream when simple radial-hole injectors are used were ...

Cooling of coupled solids by helium films

Physical Review Letters, 1992
Recently, Mester et al. have made measurements of the cooling effect of a superfluid He film on a composite bolometer. In interpreting their results they suggest that the main thermal resistance is caused by an insufficient generation of excitations, which can cause evaporation, in the He film. In this Letter we suggest an alternative explanation which

Effect of Rotation on Flow Field and Film Cooling Effectiveness in Film-Cooled Turbine Rotors

International Journal of Turbo & Jet-Engines, 2014
AbstractExperimental and numerical investigations of flow field in a film-cooled turbine model under stationary and rotating conditions in a low-speed wind tunnel are conducted. The effects of different blowing ratios (M = 1.5, 2) on the flow field are studied.

Numerical Analysis of Film-Cooling Performance and Optimization for a Novel Shaped Film-Cooling Hole

Volume 4: Heat Transfer, Parts A and B, 2012
In the present work, a numerical study on a novel shaped film-cooling hole has been performed. The novel shaped hole is designed to enhance lateral spreading of coolant on the cooling surface. The film-cooling performance of the novel shaped hole is compared with the fan, laidback fan, and dumbbell shaped film-cooling holes at density ratio of 1.75 in ...

Filmkühlung (film cooling)

2000
TranspirationskUhlung.

Film-Cooling Effectiveness From Shaped Film Cooling Holes for a Gas Turbine Blade

Volume 4: Heat Transfer, Parts A and B, 2008
The effect of film cooling holes placed along the span of a fully-cooled high pressure turbine blade in a stationary, linear cascade on film cooling effectiveness is studied using the Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) technique. Six rows of compound angled shaped film cooling holes are provided on the pressure side while four such rows are provided on the

Analysis of Film Cooling and Full-Coverage Film Cooling of Gas Turbine Blades

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 1984
Film cooling has become a standard method for the protection of the skin of gas turbine blades against the influence of the hot gas stream. The cooling air is usually injected into the boundary layer covering the skin through one or two rows of holes.
