Reputational recovery under political instability: Public debt in Portugal, 1641–83
Abstract This article examines the reputation recovery of Portugal's public debt during the war of liberation against the former Habsburg ruler. Using novel datasets on long‐ and short‐term debt and nominal interest rates, this study provides evidence that the sovereign borrower used debt credibility to build a pact of regime in a revolutionary context

Summary Motivation Cash transfers have become popular for relieving poverty in the Global South. Many programmes are conditional on beneficiaries complying with medical check‐ups, nutritional assessments, and vaccinations. Such conditions may improve the health of beneficiaries, above all the health of their young children.

Dynamic contracting with limited commitment and the ratchet effect
We study dynamic contracting with adverse selection and limited commitment. A firm (the principal) and a worker (the agent) interact for potentially infinitely many periods. The worker is privately informed about his productivity and the firm can only commit to short‐term contracts.
