The crisis and financial engineering

In this article we review the financial market development which led to the 2007–2009 financial crisis. We argue that the crisis was not because of derivatives or financial engineering products but because of lack of proper regulatory framework despite the rapid innovations in technology and markets.

I shall attempt to explain why Marx thinks that the behaviour of the financial system, let us imagine it as the tail, follows from the tendential behaviour of the productive economy, our dog. Marx does not think that the tail wags the dog; rather the tail merely helps the dog run faster to where it was going anyway.
