Prey Partitioning in a Diverse Carnivore Community: Implications for Reintroduced Fishers in Washington

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Using fecal DNA metabarcoding, we quantified dietary overlap among reintroduced fishers and sympatric coyotes, bobcats, and Pacific martens in Washington's North Cascades. Niche overlap was substantial for common prey but varied with body size, revealing fine‐scale resource partitioning that may limit fishers' access to energetically efficient prey ...

Effects of soil physical properties on dung beetle assemblages in pasture landscapes of the Brazilian Cerrado

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
We assessed the effect of the type of soil texture (loamy sand and sandy loam) and its physical properties on dung beetle species assemblages in a pastureland region of the Brazilian Cerrado. We found a reduction in the total and paracoprid beetle abundances in loamy sand soil. Furthermore, the increase of soil compaction negatively affected the entire

Brightness cues affect gap negotiation behaviours in zebra finches flying between perches

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Flying animals have had to evolve robust and effective guidance strategies for dealing with habitat clutter. Birds and insects use optic flow expansion cues to sense and avoid obstacles, but orchid bees have also been shown to use brightness cues during ...

Power priors for latent variable mediation models under small sample sizes

open access: yesBritish Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Latent variable models typically require large sample sizes for acceptable efficiency and reliable convergence. Appropriate informative priors are often required for gainfully employing Bayesian analysis with small samples. Power priors are informative priors built on historical data, weighted to account for non‐exchangeability with the ...

Navigating Family Relationships and a Sense of Home in Foster Care: The Experiences of Children With Migration Backgrounds

open access: yesChild &Family Social Work, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Establishing a sense of belonging and home in foster care can be demanding for children, as placement involves discontinuities such as ruptures with family and networks. For children with migration backgrounds, this can include adapting to new languages, traditions, religious and cultural practices. In this study, we shed light on how children

Renaming in Adoption: Exploring Name Ambivalence in Adoptive Parents' Name Stories

open access: yesChild &Family Social Work, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Names are central to identity, yet their role in adoption, where identity and family dynamics are complex, remains under‐researched. This article draws on findings from a qualitative study of names and adoption in England and Wales to examine adoptive parents' decisions about the first names of their children.
