Effect of Consolidation on the Behaviour of Excavations in Fine-grained Soils

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2016
AbstractThis study deals with the detrimental effects of consolidation on the behaviour of excavations carried out in fine-grained soils. With the aim of reproducing the main aspects of the mechanical behaviour of medium-soft clays, an advanced constitutive model was adopted, which is based on bounding surface plasticity and can take into account the ...

Bridging traditional and conventional knowledge for soil classification in landslide-prone areas using exploratory factor analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science
IntroductionUnderstanding soil movement and landslide susceptibility requires accurate soil classification. Traditional knowledge (TK) from ancient Indian texts describes soil color, texture, smell, and taste as key indicators, yet such qualitative ...

Two Routes to Land: Genomic Underpinnings of Parallel Aerial Egg Deposition in Aquatic Old‐World Pila and New‐World Pomacea (Ampullariidae)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Comparative genomics of Gondwana‐diverged Pila and Pomacea reveals parallel evolution of aerial oviposition. Convergent chromosomal rearrangements reshape regulatory landscapes within topologically associating domains. Lineage‐specific gene family expansions and viral‐derived perivitelline proteins (PV1) underpin desiccation resistance.

Mobilisation of bacteria in a fine-grained residual soil by electrophoresis

open access: yesJournal of Hazardous Materials, 2009
An investigation of electrokinetic bacterial mobilisation in a residual soil from gneiss is presented here. The experimental program aimed at assessing the efficacy of electrophoresis against the electro-osmotic flow to transport endospores of Bacillus subtilis LBBMA 155 and nitrogen-starved cells of Pseudomonas sp. LBBMA 81.

Feasibility study of a new unsaturated three-layer landfill cover system

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2016
As an improvement of the two-layer cover with capillary barrier effect (CCBE) (i.e. fine-grained soil overlying a coarse-grained soil), a new three-layer landfill cover system is proposed and investigated for humid climate.

Achieving High‐Density and Stress‐Resilient Maize Breeding Via Germplasm Innovation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Global population growth and climate change have exacerbated the global food crisis. This perspective presents a conceptual framework focusing on enhancing population advantages. Several novel breeding objectives are proposed to improve density tolerance and stress resistance for yield improvement.

Discrimination methods for dispersivity of fine-grained soils based on dispersive mechanisms

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao, 2023
The crumb tests, the pinhole tests, the double-hydrometer tests, the pore water soluble cation tests and the exchangeable sodium ion percentage tests are the common methods for identifying the dispersivity of the fine-grained soils, which are complex and

NLSS3 Impairs SHM1 Autophagic Degradation to Regulate Leaf Morphology and Salt Tolerance in Rice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In rice, NLSS3 binds and shields SHM1 from autophagic degradation to maintain serine homeostasis. The A132P mutation in nlss3 disrupts this, triggering SHM1 loss, metabolic dysfunction, K+ imbalance, and impaired ROS scavenging, which collectively drive narrow leaves and salt sensitivity.

Settlements in Fine-Grained Soils Under Cyclic Loading

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2001
ABSTRACT Based on the methods previously presented by the authors (Yasuhara et al., 1992, 1994, 1996) for predicting the degradation in strength and stiffness of soft clays in the course of cyclic loading, a methodology has been developed to estimate the cyclic loading-induced settlements.

Histone Modification Complex JMJ704‐HDA709 Negatively Regulates Salinity Tolerance in Rice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the rice histone demethylase JMJ704 interacts with HDA709―a H3K9ac deacetylase characterized herein―to form a chromatin‐modifying complex. Under salt stress, OsWRKY72 recruits this complex through interaction with JMJ704 to target loci, repressing the expression of oxidative stress and salt‐responsive genes via removal of ...
