Effects of Fineness and Dosage of Fly Ash on the Fracture Properties and Strength of Concrete

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
This study focuses on evaluating the effects of the fineness of fly ash on the strength, fracture toughness, and fracture resistance of concrete. Three fineness levels of fly ash that respectively pass sieves—no. 175, no. 250, and no. 32—were

Selection of Cashmere Fineness Functional Genes by Translatomics

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2022
Cashmere fineness is an important index to evaluate cashmere quality. Liaoning Cashmere Goat (LCG) has a large cashmere production and long cashmere fiber, but its fineness is not ideal.

Fine-Tuning can Distort Pretrained Features and Underperform Out-of-Distribution [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
When transferring a pretrained model to a downstream task, two popular methods are full fine-tuning (updating all the model parameters) and linear probing (updating only the last linear layer -- the "head"). It is well known that fine-tuning leads to better accuracy in-distribution (ID).

Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.

Towards Green AI in Fine-tuning Large Language Models via Adaptive Backpropagation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Fine-tuning is the most effective way of adapting pre-trained large language models (LLMs) to downstream applications. With the fast growth of LLM-enabled AI applications and democratization of open-souced LLMs, fine-tuning has become possible for non-expert individuals, but intensively performed LLM fine-tuning worldwide could result in significantly ...

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Optimization of Wool Slenderizing Along with In-situ Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Box–Behnken Design

open access: yesJournal of Natural Fibers, 2017
Following our previous research for simultaneous in-situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles and wool fiber fineness using sulfur-based reducing agents, here we focused on optimization of the process using response surface methodology. A Box–Behnken Design
