Finite State Machine Modelling to Facilitate the Resilience of Infrastructures: Reflections

open access: yesInfrastructures, 2020
The ability of an infrastructure to be resistant against hazards or to accommodate and recover from hazard-induced destructions and disturbances is characterized as resilience. Usually, infrastructures are engineered socio-technical systems or systems-of-

A search-based technique for testing from extended finite state machine model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Extended finite state machines (EFSMs), and languages such as state-charts that are similar to EFSMs, are widely used to model state-based systems. When testing from an EFSM M it is common to aim to produce a set of test sequences (input sequences) that ...

AI Education Matters: Teaching Hidden Markov Models

open access: yes, 2018
In this column, we share resources for learning about and teaching Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). HMMs find many important applications in temporal pattern recognition tasks such as speech/handwriting/gesture recognition and robot localization.

Positive‐Tone Nanolithography of Antimony Trisulfide with Femtosecond Laser Wet‐Etching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A butyldithiocarbamic acid (BDCA) etchant is used to fabricate various micro‐ and nanoscale structures on amorphous antimony trisulfide (a‐Sb2S3) thin film via femtosecond laser etching. Numerical analysis and experimental results elucidate the patterning mechanism on gold (reflective) and quartz (transmissive) substrates.

A Computation in a Cellular Automaton Collider Rule 110

open access: yes, 2016
A cellular automaton collider is a finite state machine build of rings of one-dimensional cellular automata. We show how a computation can be performed on the collider by exploiting interactions between gliders (particles, localisations).

Unveiling Phonon Contributions to Thermal Conductivity and the Applicability of the Wiedemann—Franz Law in Ruthenium and Tungsten Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Thermal transport in Ru and W thin films is studied using steady‐state thermoreflectance, ultrafast pump–probe spectroscopy, infrared‐visible spectroscopy, and computations. Significant Lorenz number deviations reveal strong phonon contributions, reaching 45% in Ru and 62% in W.

Exploring Heuristic and Optimization Approaches for Elevator Group Control Systems

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This paper undertakes an examination of elevator car dispatching methods in response to hall calls. Firstly, our study focuses on the establishment of a representation of an elevator group control system as a finite-state machine to understand the ...

Automata in SageMath---Combinatorics meet Theoretical Computer Science

open access: yes, 2016
The new finite state machine package in the mathematics software system SageMath is presented and illustrated by many examples. Several combinatorial problems, in particular digit problems, are introduced, modeled by automata and transducers and solved ...

Mechanical Properties of Architected Polymer Lattice Materials: A Comparative Study of Additive Manufacturing and CAD Using FEM and µ‐CT

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how pore shape and manufacturing‐induced deviations affect the mechanical properties of 3D‐printed lattice materials with constant porosity. Combining µ‐CT analysis, FEM, and compression testing, the authors show that structural imperfections reduce stiffness and strength, while bulk material inhomogeneities probably enhance ...
